I got the downloaded temp file for the 1.31 update on my Mac today and the annoying pop-up. I previously deleted the Updates folder in my Kindle app, and replaced it with an empty text file named 'Updates' which blocked the updates. Despite telling Kindle to 'skip this version', the temp_%1%2 file still downloads and I keep getting the pop-up, and on one occasion it created a new updates folder containing the dmg. Does anyone know a way to block changes in the Kindle folder (preferably blocking the temp_%1%2 file from downloading or creating the empty update folder and making it read only)?
I'm currently running High Sierra 10.13.6 (I still haven't reinstalled Mojave). |

chmod -w will make the "updates" folder read-only. This prevents the temp_%1%2 file from being copied into the updates folder as a .dmg, thereby thwarting the auto-update process. I don't know of a way to prevent the temp_%1%2 file from downloading in the first place. Every time I launch K4Mac, a pop-up asks if I want to upgrade, and I choose "no". |

I'll have to try chmod -w - I think I managed that on the old iMac (the one on Mountain Lion), but never bothered on the MacBook Pro. |

I finally succeded in converting the Amazon Kindle book to epub. But when I open it in my Kobo Clara reader the text is really small. It's like the actual page is small within the Kobo page. So it didn't help enlarging the letters.
Does anyone know how I can adapt the book's page to the Kobo's page size? |

Why let "it" update?
On the one hand my question may seem dumb because we always hear "update to the latest version" of everything for a multitude of reasons which always seem to include "for security reasons..." but seriously, what is the danger in me NOT updating?
I am using Windows 10, fully updated; Kindle for PC version 1.20.1, and Calibre 3.17 along with a one or two plug-ins I installed into it so many years ago I don't remember their name or versions. I only DeDRM my kindle books. I came back here because I recently tried to DRM and got the KFX error message. I discovered that last December I somehow let Kindle for PC update to 1.3. I got that rolled back to 1.20.1 and then ran the command line rename fix and all is good again. But going through this process caused me to think and wonder again, why would I ever want to let Calibre or Kindle for PC update? Thanks for your thoughts. |

I'm happily using K4PC 1.17.44something on my Win 10 laptop. I've no idea what version of Calibre, and I'm not home to check. I've had no reason to update Calibre, and won't unless something comes along that forces me to. It does exactly what I need. And I won't let the Kindle app update.

If you stick with updating Windows (which is sensible - operating system flaws are the main way that malware can get access to your computer, so keeping up with the latest fixes is highly recommended), it's likely that your current version of calibre will no longer run well with the latest Windows at some point. Also, calibre may gain a feature that you'd really like to have, in which case you'd want to update. But until one of these things happens, there's not much harm in sticking with the versions you're running at the moment. It it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

I'm also using Kindle for PC version 1.17 and Adobe Digital Editions version 2.0.1, and intend to use them as long as possible. But I update Calibre quite often. Not every time an update is released, but every 2-3 months or so. Usually there are some bug fixes, speeding up various operations, new features and so on. I'm using version 5.16 at the moment.
If I only used Calibre for deDRMing and occasional converting, there would be no need to update. But I use Calibre extensively not only for those things, but also for library management, editing books and metadata, sending books to devices etc. So I like to keep on top of things. I'll stick with Kindle for PC 1.17 and ADE 2.0.1 for as long as I can because those are the versions I know will give me books I can decrypt. And I don't actually use them for anything but downloading so I don't care about other features. I keep calibre and DeDRM up-to-date because I feel the improvements there are often useful or needed.

As mentioned by @jhowell, nothing to do with the topic of this thread. Though I do have to ask why you are using such an old version of calibre?
