I have found out the opposite.
Going to TOC is a chore with spinning arrows. Changing font size sometimes is slow too.
Page count is a frustration in comparison to LRF, although a lot better than progress bar on other readers.
I thought the reason for that was the way Calibre generated the files. So it is very possible that the google books are much faster.

I tested epub from Feedbooks and Harlequine websites. I think I tested another epub...but I don't remember. Maybe something I downloaded here or one of freebies during ebook week and I believe they were made by Calibre, both Calibre's epub and 's epub had the same drawbacks.
I believe you need a more powerful H/W than 505's.

Hm, beside some faulty ePubs (which either didn't follow the IDPF-specification or didn't take care of the 300kb limit per part on the PRS-505) i had no problems with ePubs on the PRS-505. It's just my experience that ePubs work better than LRFs sometimes.
The only major drawback seems to be the lack of support for justificated text. (well not sonys fault because ADE < 1.7 didn't support that).

Oh yes, another drawback. I have forgotten about it. epub is plain ugly in comparison to LRF and it doesn't matter to me whose fault it is.

Do you read thick books? Let's say at least 1.000 pages in LRF format with small sized fonts, 10pt base?

Yes, most of the books i read are at least between 800 and 1500 pages. With LRF i use 10pt base, with ePub 13pt which seems to result in the same font size on the reader. Currently i'm reading a book with ~1100 pages and the ePub works well. (unfortunately a book in german, formatted by me, the ePub was created with Calibre: Kampf um Rom).

I'm not sure if the customized font on my reader could have an positive impact on the performance of the ePub.
I followed vallorics font tutorial and use the Droid font instead of the default one.

From what I gathered on this forum people were complaining about the same problems I have mentioned regarding epub, so I don't know why yours is working so well
