In most parts of the USA now, if you are not vaccinated you are that way by choice. There are of course exceptions to this, and there always will be. But generally speaking, people have been allowed to make their choice, and they have done so (in the USA, but not necessarily true in other countries).

So it's time to get rid of the masks. I have no interest in wearing a mask to protect those that have chosen to remain unprotected. They have made their choice - that's the way it should be - and I will gladly honor their choice. Now, goodbye to masks, social distancing and capacity limits. All of it. I would give it two more weeks for the late comers to change their minds, but then all restrictions should cease. Let the chips fall where they may.

The question for me is not whether or not "it's time". Mask wearing is still mandated by my state until June 2. I don't appreciate the CDC "issuing proclamations" that directly conflict with that mandate. It gives people a false sense of permission to violate state mandate.

I predict this will fuel another surge in cases amongst those unvaccinated individuals who choose to ditch the mask and take their chances.

I finally went and got my vaccine last Saturday. I've had numerous opportunities to get vaccinated but I have a big needle phobia and just could not make myself do it. I finally tracked down some J&J vaccine and went and got the shot. It had to be that, no way I could do 2 shots.

I had a fever and chills both Saturday night and Sunday. Even was achy and not feeling good Monday. Arm's still a little tender.

I heard about the CDC new statement (5/13), but I still cannot go swimming at the health club I am a member of. The rules for reserving a lane are the same as what they were Sept. 30, 2020, and I was unable to reserve in March, so I refroze my membership. Have to pay $15 a month for the freezes. I think it's very inconsistent that it's OK for me to drink inside a bar without a mask for hours, but I cannot get back to my swimming yet. 14 months now.

I was out today to go to PT where I still will need to wear a mask, and everyone I saw on my walk there on 9th Avenue were wearing masks. I still put mine on before I leave my apartment, because of the building rules. I walk down 4 flights of stairs to get out and the ventilation is non-existent. I leave it on after I go out. I know I can take it off, but then I have to put it back on when I get to PT (or in a store).

I don't think the CDC mentioned elevators. I took two elevators today and wore the mask.

This is actually a good thing. To move towards herd immunity people need to either: (1) Take the vaccine to gain antibodies that way, or (2) Go out in public, unvaccinated, and catch COVID to either: (a) gain antibodies that way, or (b) die. Any of these outcomes moves us towards herd immunity. What's good is that people can choose which way they personally want to go about it.

The scenario that does not lead towards herd immunity is for unvaccinated people to stay locked up in their houses, afraid to go out because they might catch covid. This type of behavior does not lead to herd immunity, but the people who choose to do this have no effect on the rest of us. They are self-isolating thus taking themselves out of the equation. Works for me. It would suck to be them, but that's their choice.

Why would I catch covid just to add one number towards herd immunity?

Too pessimistic.

In countries which eventually have a high enough vaccination rate, COVID will become rare. In such countries, you can look on vaccine refusers as freeloaders who get most of the benefit without taking on the tiny vaccine risk.

Now, the U.S. may have too many refusers for COVID to die out. But I predict it will eventually become rare in most of the world.

I wasn't saying you get to choose to catch covid or not. I was saying that eventually you will add to herd immunity one way or the other.

Well, NC has been put on the path to herd immunity the hard way. The governor has immediately lifted virtually all mask/gathering size/social distancing mandates - for vaccinated and unvaccinated citizens. The DHSS strongly advises everyone to get a vaccine, and to wear a mask if it makes you feel more comfortable. Otherwise it's survival of the fittest!

My wife and I are intensely perturbed. Even Orange County, the most blue amongst us is only 44% vaccinated.
