"Utilize" This was government-speak prior to WW2 because of involvement with the French military. The word is USE! Please USE it! It's short and sweet and easy to spell.

Yes, my late sister was hugely embarrassed when she found herself saying 'you know'. We mostly grew up near Boston. Definitely a midwest construct.

Another is "That is so dope". I'm not sure what the current colloquial is on this one but all I can think of is illegal drugs so I always miss the message.

I have a similar problem with the word "sh_t". It was always used for something bad when I was growing up. Can't get used to people nowadays using it as a synonym for "stuff" or "things". I often get a mental picture that is not at all what's intended....

I seem to remember more than a few decades back running into some great sh_t at various parties.

"this is Sick" it's one of the worst slang's i've ever heard and it's been used as far as i know since the early 2000's. i'd say most of the slang that i know or have heard of doesn't bother me but that one for some reason does.

Prefixing every comment with 'so'. Contestants on quiz shows, when asked what they do for a living often say 'So, I'm a.....' Not a phrase as such but very irritating!

“Petri dish” in general and for cruise ships, “floating Petri dish.” That one was already tired a year ago. Employing it does not show how clever you are, but tends to indicate you had no idea what a Petri dish was before the pandemic.

Someone mentioned "iconic" earlier in this thread, I think. Well, here's one for you. The other day I saw a newsreader refer to "the iconic statue" in a story. Isn't a statue already an icon?

"By the way... my name is John"
Why do Americans always introduce themselves by starting with "by the way". |

Lately in my local area, lots of people are suddenly saying "I appreciate you", instead of "thank you." (Perhaps it is more widespread, but I have no immediate knowledge.)
I don't know why I find this incredibly annoying. |
