The difference is in transmitted light versus reflected light.
In the first case, you look directly into the light source, but not in the second case.
It is a completely different light quality.

Yes. I tend to go back and forth between reading on an iPad and reading on a Kobo. I'm short sighted but had lasik about 20+ years ago and still don't need glasses. I need reading glasses if the print is small but can read most things fine without them. I don't tend to like bright lights.

If my previous post didn't answer that question for you (namely my reference to comparing apples to oranges), I'm afraid I don't anything further to contribute.

Because apparently we are so stupid it would never have occurred to us to try adjusting the brightness on a phone?

I can read e-ink fine but not LCD long. Phones are way too small and I would find that incredibly annoying. I can read on my Kindle Fire indoors and in certain settings, but too much of it will give me eye strain and a headache. I can't use it outside or in certain lights, though. I can never read on a computer for a book, I can't focus and find it annoying.

Some do complain that LCD is too bright. So the possible solution is to turn down the brightness. Nobody is calling anyone stupid.

If I had given my Dad an iPad and he found it too bright, he would no have known how to turn the brightness down.

I used to do that on my first Android tablet which I got 10 years ago in 2011. It wasn't a very good device and the screen wasn't that bright, so regarding the reading experience, it was actually really good with Moon+ Reader.
Two years later, I got my first ereader and from then on I only read on LCD screens when I need the scrolling feature. This happens very seldom, though. Nothing beats e-ink screens with warm light.

I have perfect eyesight, but some sort of sensitivity to light. I always have my LCD monitors on the lowest setting (unless for some reason I'm sitting somewhere where the sun shines directly onto the screen), and almost always walk around in sunglasses outside. At night I use redshift to wipe out the blue light on my computer and a similar app for my phone.

I strongly prefer physical books, and then e-ink, for reading. I find it hard to concentrate on LCD screens for long periods of time.

No it didn't. Maybe you think it did for you. But it didn't for me. I thought you said you didn't have anything else to say.

I don't consider it an "Apple to oranges" comparison. They both have lights. There are comparable sizes now. I could see discomfort due to weight or form factor, but there seems to be an abundance of reports of eye fatigue from LCD. Is it refresh rates? Light level? ...

Apples to Oranges

Front Light vs. Back Light: Why Front Lights Are Eye-friendly

The direction the light is coming from, the type of light and the screen are all significant factors. The above article is from an e-ink vendor (BOOX), but does not make the points any less valid.

I can read whole books on LCD most of the time. I usually read on the iPad because it's just so much easier to wirelessly load non-Kindle store content to it (e.g. DRM-free ebooks on Calibre OPDS server, etc).

When I get a migraine attack though, I can still read paper and e-ink but LCDs seem to aggravate the migraine.

1. Near sighted.
2. Needs to be very dim.

I voted yes. Full time glasses wearer, near sighted. I find that non lcd screens aren't bright enough, the text is too dim.
