For this reason and also Blacklisting, I'd only get a S/H kindle from someone I know, or officially Amazon refurbished. Actually unless you are broke, a Kobo Libra is better value than Ad free Kindle. If your kindle breaks or you replace it, use that device on your Amazon account and download via PC. Actually even if the Kindle is your only device that's best. |

Sometimes I think about picking up a Kindle. After all, I do buy my books from Amazon and the very first Oasis, the Voyage and the latest Paperwhite all look nice enough.
But then I read threads in here from Kindle owners and get brought back to reality. |

I know that for me, the Oasis 3 I originally complained about is (with a £4 skin to make its back less cold) the single nicest reading device I have ever owned. Downsides: only that if Amazon goes bust or stops supporting the Kindle library, it'll perhaps be hard to keep my library when my latest Kindle reader wears out, even on a phone or tablet. But I'm confident that if that happens, the latest antipiracy wossname will be cracked in no time and backing the collection up with Calibre will become trivial. So ebooks should reliably outlast the devices they reside on, as long as I don't mind violating that aspect of copyright law that in the mid-2000s was found to also be violated routinely by at least half the House of Commons, including most of the then Cabinet. |

The DRM for KF8/Mobi has already been cracked and you can backup your Calibre library in KF8/Mobi.

I have had zero problems with sideloaded (from Calibre) books on my Kindles. Most of the issues I've read here have been with directly downloaded books, syncing, cloud collections etc.. None of which I use. As to ads, no idea, as all my Kindles have been ad-free from the start. I see absolutely no point in buying a Kindle with ads and then worry how to get rid of them afterwards. Plus the fact that Amazon doesn't even sell special offer Kindles in my country. Even if it did, I wouldn't buy them.

In short, Amazon e-readers are excellent hardware, but the unnecessary software limitations render them unusable for me. I think a JBed Oasis with Koreader would be a wonderful device, but alas, it is not meant to be. Last edited by Pajamaman; 04-25-2021 at 12:03 PM. |

I would disagree with that. The majority of Kindle etc users on these boards are happy with their devices. The more knowledgeable among them are however watching the development of KFX and unbreakable drm with some nervousness. I assume they will migrate to another brand if Amazon ever shuts drm down completely.

You can bet on that. Unbreakable DRM=no deal for me. I have not and never will buy a single book which cannot be cleaned of DRM.

Kindle has nice features like X-ray and Goodreads integration and Send to Kindle. But I don't think those are features I would use. But then I read about things like Kindle automatically updating book covers in your library whether you want it to or not. And if you use .mobi or .azw files you don't get Kindle's nicer formatting, or even hyphenated words. And the ads. And making them device specific instead of account specific.. It just seems like the richest man in the world is nickle and dimeing people. In the US, the Nook Glowlight 3, Kobo Clara and Kindle Paperwhite are all comparable devices. 300ppi, e-ink Carta screens. 8GB storage. But the prices aren't. And don't tell me about sales. They all have sales. Kobo Clara (ad-free): $119 Nook Glowlight 3 (ad-free): $119 Kindle Paperwhite (ad-supported): $129, (ad-free) $149 What are those ads supporting?
