We used to say in the USA that we are always at odds with each other until attacked, then we unite against the common enemy with a great resolve. This pandemic should have been the kind of attack to unite us together long enough to get it under control and send it to the virus graveyard. But of course we didn't do that this time around. We still have the fake news believers, in large numbers too, that cannot believe COVID-19 is a real threat. We still have politicians who are somewhat scared of the COVID-19 virus, yet are more scared of being voted out of office, so they pushed to stay open way too long and then pushed to reopen way too soon. I'm all for freedoms, but when things like this pandemic arise the majority of people seem to behave like little children who have no clue as to what actions to take, or how to react. The people need strong guidance from leaders and experts much like children need parents to teach them not to play in a busy street and do all the other dumb things that can get them injured or killed. We lacked that kind of national leadership until it was very late in the game, and even now local and state politics takes precedence over common sense and science.

Unfortunately, this is not just a failed response within the USA, it was a massive failure all around the globe and within multiple countries. I would like to think we have learned our lessons, but I seriously doubt we have.

Had my 2nd Moderna shot on Thursday. Had a low grade fever and headache yesterday for about 6 hours. All is now well. Had just fatigue last time, but none this time. My masks are starting to wear out a bit so having to replace elastic.

The two-week period after my second shot ends on May 1. I'm celebrating the day with my first haircut in seven months and a bottle of Pliny the Younger, in that order. My griillfiend and I will attend her art opening the next day.

In New York State, your government page tells you that no appointments are available within a 50-mile radius. Then you check individual pharmacy and hospital pages at 3:00 a.m. and discover you can make an appointment the next morning at an office three blocks away from your house.

Everyone I know personally in every age bracket experienced symptoms with their second shot. A friend called me to complain about how awful she felt and went on to curse all vaccines in three languages. She'll be getting the booster whenever that happens, of course.

mRNA vaccines and their genesis are fascinating. It's amazing that a cancer vaccine is in phase III clinical trials and will probably be available in three years.

And it's inspiring that a woman scientist pursued its development on her own after pharmaceutical companies told her that RNA was a dead end.

Right?? When I got my first shot the pharmacist was laughing at me because I was fangirling over Katalin Karikó while I was staring at the wall and chattering away to distract myself from the impending jab.

Australia hasn't just been lucky that the virus decided to stay away because our borders are sea not land. Intervention has been comprehensive and community-wide at every level of government and organisation: lockdowns and mask mandates where/when required, distancing, other restrictions, managed quarantine, contact tracing, QR code check-in, accessible free testing, etc etc etc; and it has all carried very significant costs - not just the end of international tourism for the foreseeable future (except perhaps NZ), but the costs of the restriction of movement of workers and students and so on. (International students are a huge chunk of our education economy.) We normally have a very active border, and it was all but closed.

Nothing to do with being an island. Just (largely) good management and community participation.

Had Astrazenaca first jab the other day. I was a bit fluey for a day or so. Took paracetomal and I wasn't so bad. I'm in Canada.

The borders are closed both ways so the loss of revenue from inbound tourism has been partly offset by us not being allowed to spend our money as foreign tourists elsewhere. So we spend it on our national sport - buying and selling houses

I sometimes think the same could be said of epidemiologists in Australia. A fresh one seems to pop up everyday - which is no bad thing. Although some seem to believe all risks could be eradicated if the federal government took control of everything. Truth is our federal agencies wouldn't even have the capacity to operate a game of two-up on Anzac Day (topical). They could fund and regulate it, they're good at that - but operate it - nuh.

In the UK and elsewhere the hospital clinicians are regarded as heroes. In Australia it's the state public health teams, i.e. contact tracers (aka disease detectives), the nurses who take the swabs in quarantine, the people who work at the borders, the people who transport people who are covid-19 positive etc.

The level of community participation is a direct result of the fact that public health measures have worked.

Good example was Sydney's BLM rally. It was given the go ahead providing they wore masks and sat under the trees in the Domain in groups of no more than 500 hundred, and that they arrived and dispersed in small groups. About 3,000 people did as asked, a handful of covidiots refused - they were booed.

None in Palau - they're in a bubble with Taiwan, but they're on our RED list. If I could go there maybe I could get a a couple of shots of the Moderna Biden sent there - you can guess why.

Fiji will crush the current outbreak as it has in the past. But maybe it should stop sending its soldiers on UN Peace Keeping missions, this outbreak is not the first to be caused by soldiers returning with covid and then breaking quarantine rules by fraternising with local ladies.
