I love Calibre and it manages my 3000 books very well
I used to just save my books in EPub fomats with it. However (I don't know why) a few weeks ago I also decided to save all the books as Mobi too. When backing up my library to an external every do often, used to take 20mins But now it takes 3 hours! And I like to have 2 copies! It must be because of the mobis Is there any way to remove some of the mobis? It has to be simple lol ![]() |

Yes very easy.
First select the book (or books) you wish to just remove the MOBI formats from. next right click the selected book(s) and look in the Remove Book sub menu. use the option "Remove files of specific format from selected books". This pops up a dialog which shows the available the formats of said book. Just click the MOBI option. Try just one book first as a test of course. |

Since I tried the same copy with 2 externals I have a horrible feeling it is a different problem though
Copied to an older external took 7 mins Copy to an external I bought a few months ago is still trying after 3 hours. Not sure what to do |

I've seen issues like this when a hard drive is starting to fail and the OS tries to map out the failing blocks. It makes for a massive hit on the system.
Run a disk check against both the source and destination drives. Also check it's plugged in correctly and try another USB socket for the external drive. Disks are very fragile and not made to last anymore. The warranties show that by now offering a 2 or 3 year one these days. And the new one may be a bad one (Says he with 30 odd years of large systems experience) |

If the new disk is only a few months old then it should be under warranty. Get who ever sold you it to provide a replacement.

Would hesitate to recommend an external drive as the insides of the devices change too regularly.
I bought a Toshiba Canvio a few years back which is still going (the previous Western Digital device had died after 10 years). However I only use that device every few months to backup to so it hasn't actually had that many hours of powered up time. So it might not be a good device in reality after probably only 300 hours of use. Hence don't assume that just because mine is still working, 1 purchased today would last as long. |

If it is in use all the time, I would put a desktop (3.5") drive in a powered (has power cord) , vented case (heat kills drives).

I have found that too My other external is a lot older and still working. I have had 2 WD externals that have let my down. I have always bought WDs but I suppose its just bad luck. Use mine most days. Also I am worried about taking the faulty one back as it is full of personal stuff Last edited by Jo69; 03-28-2021 at 07:42 AM. |
