The current generation is from 2019, I wouldn't expect a new one before 2022.

The Kindle Oasis got updated in 2019 with adjustable colour lighting. However, I believe the device is otherwise identical to the 2017 model. Personally, I would say that this model dates back to 2017.

The PW4 is not the same as the PW3. The PW4 is flush with the bezel and it's not as clear/sharp as the PW3.

I agree. The Kindle Oasis 7" is nearly 3,5 years old, with some hardware upgrades in 2019. The design seems perfect, so I wouldn't expect it to change. Maybe we get USB-C, maybe a color option.

@Jon: Braid is talking about the Kindle Oasis, not the Paperwhite.

Actually, the OP was talking about "...the next Kindle".

Rentaplan then made the first allusion to a Kindle Oasis (without, however, mentioning the Oasis by name).

In the next post, Braid then specifically did mention the Oasis by name.

It appears as if Jon confused the discussion of the Oasis with the PW4.

So, the question concerning the next Kindle could include (I would argue) that the OP is interested in any information or thoughts concerning "the next Kindle", whether it be a PW4 or an Oasis or any ereader from Amazon that might hit the market.

True. And as we don't know Amazon's plans, we can just guess, what the next Kindle could be. Maybe it will be just the iteration of a slightly modified model or maybe a completely different one.

Personally I would like a improved, maybe bigger, Kindle Oasis. Of course, tastes differ

I agree; the thread is asking about any new Kindle. I mentioned the Oasis specifically because it is quite an old design and so due for a refresh, and, being the flagship model, it is likely to premiere any new features.

Maybe amazon released new flagship devices more frequently in the past because the e-ink technology was improving; perhaps the performance of CPU, flash storage, and Li-ion batteries was also improving, while prices for those components was dropping. It that is true, then it makes sense to see less frequent releases as progress in those technologies slows down.

While my Kindle Oasis is overall the most responsive and quickest e-ink device I have used, a faster and more efficient CPU can always accelerate this even more and get it closer to the responsiveness of a tablet, while providing longer battery life. However, it is my perception that improvements in CPU performance and efficiency are slower than they used to be. On the other hand, flash storage technology has maintained rapid progress. However, storing too many items will slow devices down without an accompanying CPU boost and greater battery capacity, which may impose limits on the storage sizes offered for e-readers. And of course, if new e-ink technology provided greater resolution or higher contrast, amazon would quickly put out a new device to keep up with the competition. I suspect (and hope) that they will hold off on colour until they can get it looking more vibrant and less washed out than current technology seems to offer.

I don't have any insight into the development of those technologies. But still, perhaps looking at the release schedule for new efficient CPUs, battery technologies, and e-ink technologies, is your best bet if you're looking for predictions for when new devices will be released and what their features will be.
