I've read the first two, and rated them both 5/5.
I second the recommendation - I had an ARC of this and quite liked it...

The seven Lady Hardcastle mysteries by T E Kinsey are on sale at £0.99 each at the moment. I've read the first in the spin-off series, The Deadly Mystery of the Missing Diamonds, and if this lot are up to that standard they're well worth reading. I can't resist.

I read and really liked the most recent Lady Hardcastle book, The Fatal Flying Affair. I'm a little biased because I have spent maybe half my career in aviation, and my husband is even more of an aviation buff that I am, and Kinsey gets a lot of the little details right, including a nice layman's explanation of why airplanes take off into the wind. But it also was just a flat out fun mystery. I've now read Missing Diamonds, and if you liked the one, you'll like the other, I think. Just change out Jazz-Age London for a (not so) sleepy English village...

The omnibus is now a Countdown Deal in both the US and UK ($2.99/£1.99), for about 6 more days. If you didn't buy the individual titles earlier, this is great deal for the four books. The links below are still good.

The remaining two titles are not too badly priced as is at $3.99/£2.99, and there's also an omnibus of all four for $5.99/£4.99, if you want to get them all at once. These were originally published under the pen name Philippa Morgan, but I couldn't find much info on those editions - I'm guessing Gooden has gotten the rights back and is re-publishing them himself.

There's a lot of cheap Raymond Chandler books on Amazon, but I'm pretty sure they are pirate editions, based on the fact they use the original pulp covers and Chandler isn't in the public domain. The book I'm linking to is the legit edition.

When I first noticed Blood of a Gladiator in my eReaderIQ feed, I figured it had to be a Simon Scarrow title. Imagine my surprise , when it turned out to be the first book in a new historical series by Jennifer Ashley, whose Captain Gabriel Lacey series, written using the pen name Ashley Gardner, I've quite liked. That series started out traditionally published, and then Gardner started self-pubbing it, but I've liked all of the ones I've read, which is most (maybe all) of them.

I have not read Blood of a Gladiator, but it's free right now in the US, and Ashley has done well self-pubbing her other series, and if I wait until I have read it, it probably won't be free anymore. So, if you are sensitive to self-pubbed, skip the rest of this post... (But it's free, so if you try it and hate it, just delete it!) And, the description reminds me a little bit of David Wishart's "political" Marcus Corvinus books, which are my favorites among that series, so I have my fingers crossed.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087C9MR2S
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/blood-of-a-gladiator/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Leonidas, champion gladiator of Rome, is set free from the games by a mysterious benefactor who grants him freedom, a place to live, and a servant—Cassia, a scribe—to look after him.

But the benefactor is only so generous—Leonidas must pay his own way and Cassia’s, which means hiring himself out. The sharp-witted Cassia quickly lands him a post as a bodyguard, escorting a retired senator to Ostia.

The trip soon turns deadly, as Leonidas and Cassia find themselves squarely in the middle of intrigue that reaches from the slums of the Subura to the Palatine Hill and the emperor Nero himself.

The Fifth Profession by David Morrell is $0.99 at Amazon US.

I haven't read The Fifth Profession yet, but I have really enjoyed the other Morrell books I have read.

Quote:
From the bestselling author of First Blood comes a spectacular thriller, in which a former Navy SEAL and a Japanese samurai master are bound together in a terrifying past that never happened.
