Sounds like my one set of grandparents. They used to joke that every time my grandfather hung his pants on the bedpost, my grandmother ended up pregnant. They had 14 children.

Ow, my aching back! (Sympathy pains, and I've never even had a baby!)

What made it all the more astonishing was that grandpa was a big man of about 6'4" and grandma was maybe all of 4'8".

If she couldn't reach something up on a shelf she'd ask hubby for help. But all he'd do was to pick her up instead so that she could reach it for herself. That would annoy her to no end!

My philosophy about children is that the parents (or at least the grownups in the family) must out number the children. Since the USA's laws prohibit bigamy, that means no more than one child for me which is what I have. I was 36 when she was born & often told people that 36 is not too old to have a baby in the house but 56 is too old to have a 20 year old in the house.

Thankfully The problem has been triply fixed for us (twice for her and once for me).

I'm 39 this year too. I am very rarely asked in such family conversations as to when I will be providing the world with another sprog, but I am always ready to volunteer that it's "not for lack of trying!".

Cheers,

Exposed on Nightline

I am so enraged about what I just watched on NIGHTLINE tonight, I can't even express it adequately. There was a segment about PUPPY MILLS run by the Amish of Lancaster, PA. I am somewhat familiar with both the peoples and the farms of the area, and I never would have suspected that they would be involved in such a despicable money making enterprise if I hadn't seen it. They described their practice of de-barking dogs, the dreadful C-sections they perform, and of course the totally deplorable conditions they're kept in. Apparently these operations are pretty widespread throughout the community and they've been rather successful in keeping it hidden. So much for their beliefs against "worldly conformity." They've proven to conform to much of the same EVIL they appear to shun outside of their private, peaceful world.

I rescue kitties but some folks in the group I work with also take dogs and some have rescues from these mills. I met the sweetest little girl this last weekend. We were doing kitty adoptions at this particular fair but this little girl dog was along just to visit with one of the volunteers. She was the sweetest, friendliest, cuddliest little girl. She was missing an eye. I could tell by looking at her that she'd been through more than I could conceive of, but she still wanted to snuggle with us and meet new people. It was a testament to the good soul of dogs.

edit* you already said that. Yeah, my friend said the Amish are the worst. My friend bought his dog from one of them and had no idea.

And that's why everyone should adopt...

I was really hoping this would turn out to be bad reporting on the part of Nightline, but apparently not:

That's what makes it all so sad. Even when you go to a shelter to adopt, you don't always know where the animals came from. Often those animals have been rescued from just such puppy mills (or hoarders) and so, in essence, you're still (unintentionally) supporting the practice by adopting that animal. It's still a good thing to adopt and better than the alternative, but it certainly doesn't solve the problem, or stop the practice.

aren't there laws against such mistreatment of animals ? here we have the "Nallet law" from 1989 which expands on previously existing legislation to define sanitary conditions for animal raisers or keepers. it also outlaws the systematic euthanasia of lost or abandoned animals and prolongs the term they can stay in a shelter. i would hope that such places would be hunted out and closed and all the animals removed to better conditions.
