Wash This Blood Clean from My Hand is the second in the Commissaire Adamsberg series by Fred Vargas. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I've liked several of the titles in this series - although I'm a little bit biased towards mysteries set in France, so take with a grain of salt!

Quote:
“Wildly imaginative.”—The New York Times

“Adamsberg is a terrific creation and his team of misfits a joy to watch in action.”—Peter Robinson, New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Banks series

Three wounds in a perfectly straight line was the bloody signature that marked victims from every corner of France who had been murdered over the course of thirty years. Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, the chief of police in Paris's 7th Arrondissement, is deeply and personally familiar with the case, and though others were always framed and convicted for these crimes, including his own brother, the Commissaire knows the true identity of the killer—and knows that the murderer died in 1987. All the more disturbing, then, is Adamsberg's discovery one morning of a fresh murder with exactly the same profile...

No Cure for the Dead is the first in the Florence Nightingale series by Christine Trent, who is perhaps better known for her Lady of Ashes series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and to £1.43 at Kindle UK.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/no-cure-for-the-dead-2

Quote:
A murdered nurse, long-buried secrets—this Victorian mystery series debut starring Florence Nightingale is a “natural fit for fans of Anne Perry’s William Monk mysteries” (Booklist)

It is 1853. Lady of the Lamp Florence Nightingale has just accepted the position of Superintendent of the Establishment for Gentlewomen During Temporary Illness in London. She has hardly had time to learn the names of the nurses in her charge when she suddenly finds one of them hanging in the Establishment’s library. Her name was Nurse Bellamy.

Florence’s mettle is tested by the dual goals of preserving what little reputation her hospital has and bringing Nurse Bellamy’s killer to justice. Her efforts are met with upturned noses and wayward glances except for her close friend and advocate inside the House of Commons, Sidney Herbert. As Florence digs deeper, however, her attention turns to one of the hospital investors and suddenly, Sidney becomes reluctant to help.

With no one but herself to count on, Florence must now puzzle out what the death of an unknown, nondescript young nurse has to do with conspiracies lurking about at the highest levels of government before she’s silenced too.

The Alpine Recluse is the "Rth" title in the alphabetically named Emma Lord series by Mary Daheim. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and £1.99 at Kindle UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Alpine-Reclus...dp/B000GCFBMO/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-alpine-recluse
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000GCFBMO

Spoiler:
Quote:
For many mystery readers, Alpine, Washington–Mary Daheim’s fictional small town in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains–has become a beloved second home, a delicious retreat from the stresses of life. Yet the editor of The Alpine Advocate, Emma Lord, knows all too well that the picturesque old logging town is loaded with scandal: family feuds, illicit romance, chicanery, and sometimes deadly violence.

THE ALPINE RECLUSE

In the middle of a hot midsummer night, Emma is awakened by fire trucks rushing to a blaze at the nearby home of newlyweds Tim and Tiffany Rafferty. At daybreak, Tiffany and her unborn child are safe, but Tim, never blessed with good luck in all his thirty-plus years, has perished in the fierce conflagration. Sheriff Milo Dodge suspects murder and arson, and rumors fly from the Burger Barn and Mugs Ahoy to the Grocery Basket and the Venison Inn. Some swear the Rafferty marriage was crumbling. Others hint at stock fraud. A few mention momentary sightings of a possibly mad recluse known as Old Nick.

Sacrificing the heady enticements of a budding romance to nail down a great story, Emma shifts into high investigative gear while her fearless House & Home editor, Vida Runkel, rushes in where angels fear to tread: straight into the private lives of some of Alpine’s most respectable–and now terminally edgy–citizens. But neither Emma nor Vida suspects the unbelievable truth.

Joffe Books sent me an email indicating that No Place to Hide by Dan Latus, which is the first in the Jake Ord series, is free now through March 14 at Kindle US and UK. I've read and enjoyed some other titles by Joffe Books authors, but haven't read anything by Latus. This looks a little more thriller-ish than I usually go for, but obviously others may have other tastes . And it's free...

A TENSE ADVENTURE THRILLER WITH HEART-STOPPING TWISTS

Jake Ord lives in peaceful seclusion with his companion, Magda, in a small town in Portugal.

They each have something to hide, but their life together is just how they want it: tranquil, safe and agreeably boring.

THEN JAKE RECEIVES A PHONE CALL THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Crime boss Ed Fogarty has escaped from prison. He wants revenge on those who put him there.

He also wants the missing £20 million from his last heist.

Fogarty is ticking names off his hit list.
He knows where Jake lives.
It’s time for Jake and Magda to run.

But Magda is no stranger to the criminal underworld — or to the violent men hunting them. CAN JAKE REALLY TRUST HER?

AN EXHILARATING THRILLER THAT WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS

MEET JAKE ORD, an ex-spy who does not dwell on the past. Why would he? It holds few attractions for him. He just wants some peace and quiet in his retirement. But characters from the old days keep cropping up. And they always bring trouble. Luckily, Jake is a man who can handle himself. And he’s not afraid of getting his hands dirty.

Joseph Flynn started off as traditionallly published, but has been published by his own Stray Dog Press for quite a while. I have read all (I think) of his Jim McGill titles, most of his John Tall Wolf books, all of his Ron Ketchum books, and a few of his non-series books. I've liked all that I've read, except for a couple of the non-series books.

Right now two of his non-series titles are free at Kindle US and UK. I've read and liked one of them, haven't read the other one.

Murder and Mendelssohn is the 20th and most recent (2013) in the Phrynne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood - at least until the new title comes out in June...

It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and it's discountable at Kobo.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Mendel...dp/B07VMH2QM5/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Murder-Mend...dp/B07VMH2QM5/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/mur...-mendelssohn-7

Spoiler:
Quote:
An orchestral conductor has been found dead and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson needs the delightfully incisive and sophisticated Miss Fisher's assistance to enter a world in which he is truly lost. Hugh Tregennis, not much liked by anyone, has been murdered in a most flamboyant mode by a killer with a point to prove. But how many killers is Phryne really stalking?

At the same time, the dark curls, disdainful air and the lavender eyes of mathematician and code-breaker Rupert Sheffield are taking Melbourne by storm. They've certainly taken the heart of Phryne's old friend from the trenches of WWI, John Wilson. Phryne recognizes Sheffield as a man who attracts danger and is determined to protect John from harm. Even with the faithful Dot, Mr. and Mrs. Butler, and all in her household ready to pull their weight, Phryne's task is complex. While Mendelssohn's Elijah, memories of the Great War, and the science of deduction ring in her head, Phryne's past must also play its part as MI6 become involved in the tangled web of murders.

A Fine Line is the fifth and most recent (2014) in the Guido Guerrieri series by Gianrico Carofiglio - at least until the new one comes out next month, after a long hiatus. Per SYKM, A Fine Line was a finalist for the 2017 International Dagger Award. It has dropped to $1.99/£1.99 at Kindle US/UK right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017QL8NMW
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fine-Line-G...dp/B083CMVD5S/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The fifth in the best-selling Guido Guerrieri series.

When Judge Larocca is accused of corruption, Guerrieri goes against his better instincts and takes the case. Helped by Annapaola Doria, a motorbike-riding bisexual private detective who keeps a baseball bat on hand for sticky situations, he investigates the alleged links to the mafia. Of course Guerrieri cannot stop himself from falling for Annapaola's exotic charms.

The novel is a suspenseful legal thriller but it is also much more. It is the story of a judge who, to quote Dostoevsky, "lies to himself and listens to his own lies, so gets to the point where he can no longer distinguish the truth, either in himself or around himself."

Julie Smith's books go on sale/free so often that they used to have their own thread here at MR. But, if for some reason, you haven't gotten or tried any yet, here's an omnibus of the first titles from three of her four series - and it's free right now at Kindle US. (I've read and liked a lot of her books...)

The books are:
  • New Orleans Mourning (Skip Langdon #1, per SYKM, this won the 1991 Edgar Award for Best Mystery)
  • Louisiana Hotshot (Talba Wallis #1)
  • Death Turns A Trick (Rebecca Schwartz #1)

THREE KICKASS FEMALE DETECTIVES
WALK INTO ONE SPELLBINDING BOOK...

We’ve compiled this little library for readers seeking addictive, action-packed, new female sleuth series. Each of these three books contains a gripping introduction to a fun, feisty, woman detective, each with many more stories to enjoy.

The set’s like a cocktail mixer in a box—perfect for those who want to meet and mingle with a few different sleuths at once! If you hit it off, you can move into more serious relationships with all of them.

First, we introduce Rebecca Schwartz, a quick-witted lawyer turned detective who solves mysteries in bustling San Francisco. In her debut, she starts out happily playing piano in a brothel—then ends up having to unpuzzle the murder of a dead hooker. This lively mystery manages to strike a balance between gritty and funny—with a few romantic entanglements, for good measure. It will appeal to both cozy readers as well as those looking for laughs and adventure.

Next up is Skip Langdon: she’s a firecracker rookie cop whose hellbent on cleaning up the lush yet seedy city of New Orleans. Her series begins with the mid-Mardi Gras murder of a prominent uptown socialite.

As a former debutante, Skip uses her white glove contacts to scour the New Orleans elite for the killer. Skip is so arresting that this gritty mystery won the 1991 Edgar Allan Poe Award for best novel. More hard-boiled than DEATH TURNS A TRICK, but definitely a match for those who love wit with their grit.

Last, we’ve included New Orleans native Talba Wallis’s debut as a PI. Grumpy, old-school Eddie Valentino needs to team up with a sharp young IT addition to his out-of-date detective agency. Talba Wallis—a twenty-something computer wiz who also happens to be a poet and all-around free spirit—snatches up the opportunity, almost over Eddie’s dead body. This mismatched dynamic duo quickly gets on the case of a twisted, sociopath with a ton of recording industry clout.

He should be no match for tech-savvy Talba and street-wise Eddie—if they can only leave their baggage at the door. A very fun read for those who like banter and sarcasm, yet with all the good will in the world.

I got an email from Poisoned Pen Press about a sale on series books by two authors (I’ve not read anything by either of them). They have new books coming out and all the previous books are on sale.

David P. Wagner – The Rick Montoya Italian Mystery Series, books 1-6 (free, 0.99, 1.99, 2.99, 3.99, 4.99).

Randall Silvis -- The Ryan DeMarco Mystery Series, books 1-4 (free, 0.99, 1.99, 2.99).

I looked at the prices on Amazon and some of the Wagner ones are actually a bit less.

The link is to the newsletter; it has links to eleven! book stores.
