And yet another Zelda White/Virginia Holmes/Poisoned Pen Press freebie at Kindle US and UK. With patience, we may get them all...

Odd behavior for PPP, but I'm not complaining!

The Vanishing Spy, #2

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07G4GR47B

Spoiler:
Quote:
A murdered French butler. A missing skeleton key. For retired detective Virginia Holmes, this case should be no problem. But when Holmes and her assistant travel to France to investigate, the sleuths find themselves embroiled in a far deeper mystery that leads all the way back to the French Resistance of World War II. Spies. Nazis. Deception.

And a town that may hold a terrible secret.

Candles and Roses by Alex Walters is free on Amazon. Not sure if self-pubbed or just small press but he does have a trad pub series out and I have read and enjoyed this DI Alec McKay series. Recommend if you like Scottish procedurals.

All six of the books in Phiip Gooden's Nick Revill historical mystery series have dropped to £1.99 each at Kindle UK, except for the first one, which is £2.99. This is pretty odd - usually publishers discount the first one a bit more, to get you hooked, rather than making it more expensive. But what do I know?

Titles are:
  • That Sleep of Death
  • Death of Kings
  • The Pale Companion
  • Alms for Oblivion
  • Mask of Night
  • An Honourable Murder
link for the six: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search/?s...price-asc-rank

A rare price drop on a Travis McGee title (Pale Gray for Guilt) in the US, and an even rarer repeat price drop. McGee titles don't stay on sale very long, and are outrageously priced when not on sale, so grab it now if you want it! Links below are still good.

Most of the books in Donna Leon's excellent Commissario Brunetti series, set in Venice, go on sale a lot, so I don't post them any more. Today, however, the most recent book in the series - at least until the next one comes out later this month - has dropped to $2.99 as part of today's US Kindle Daily Deal. It's not matched at Kobo, at least as of now. I haven't seen this one on sale for less either in the US or the UK so far, so here's the info...

Trace Elements, Commissario Guido Brunetti #29 (I'm trusting them on the counting), by Donna Leon

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Trace-Element...dp/B07YF4SD2L/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Trace-Eleme...dp/B07YF4SD2L/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The New York Times–bestselling author of Unto Us a Son Is Given continues “one of the most exquisite and subtle detective series ever” (The Washington Post).

When a dying hospice patient gasps that her husband was murdered over “bad money,” Commissario Brunetti softly promises he and his colleague, Claudia Griffoni, will look into what initially appears to be a private family tragedy. They discover that the man had worked in the field, collecting samples of contamination for a company that measures the cleanliness of Venice’s water supply, and that he had recently died in a mysterious motorcycle accident. Piecing together the tangled threads, Brunetti comes to realize the perilous meaning in the woman’s accusation and the threat it reveals to the health of the entire region. But justice in this case proves to be ambiguous, as Brunetti is reminded it can be when he reads Aeschylus’s classic play The Eumenides.

Caroline Minuscule is the first in Andrew Taylor's William Dougal series, and it's on sale right now at Kindle UK for £0.99. This was Taylor's first mystery, and per SYKM, it won a New Blood Dagger, and was a finalist for an Edgar for Best First Novel. I read this a long time ago in DTB, while I myself was in grad school (Dougal is a grad student, although in a very different way), and enjoyed it - although it's not quite the academic mystery you might expect...

Quote:
The first book in the brilliant William Dougal crime series, from the bestselling author of The American Boy and The Ashes of London.

William Dougal, a post-graduate expert in the medieval script of Caroline Minuscule, stumbles on the garroted corpse of his tutor - and finds himself embroiled in a hunt for a cache of diamonds, a deadly fairy story in which no one obeys the rules, least of all Dougal's girlfriend Amanda. As the body count rises, the couple pursue both the diamonds and their doom from London, to an East Anglian cathedral close, from Cambridge to a wintry Suffolk estuary.

Death Comes to Cornwall is the first in the Molly Higgins series by Kate Johnson. It is free right now at Kindle UK, altlhough sadly, not at Kindle US.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081TYPTJ8

Spoiler:
Quote:
Shortlisted for the Jackie Collins Romantic Thriller Award category of the Romantic Novel Awards 2021

The perfect holiday destination. The perfect place for murder...

Molly Higgins never expected to be caught up in a murder investigation. All she'd hoped for this year was to work hard, save enough money to open her very own café on the Cornish coast and avoid her ex, Conor Blackstone, who has just arrived back in the village.

But when she and Conor discover a body on the cliffside in Port Trevan they are thrown once more together. Molly is keen to leave the mystery to the police, but when she finds herself their top suspect, Molly has no choice but to catch the killer herself - before it is too late.

A Rare Interest In Corpses, apa The Companion, is the first in the Lizzie Martin/Inspector Ross series by Ann Granger. I've read and liked some of Granger's Mitchell and Markby series, but oddy enough, given my propensity for historical mysteries, I've never found my way to Granger's Martin/Ross series. Now Rare Interest is free at Kindle US, so there's no risk to try it! Although I do wish that not every blurb felt as if it has to call the book it's describing either "thrillling" or "gripping"...kvetch kvetch...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZK9P2BZ

Spoiler:
Quote:
The first thrilling instalment in the Inspector Ben Ross Mysteries.

It is 1864 when young Lizzie Martin takes up the post of companion to a wealthy widow who is also a slum landlord. Lizzie is intrigued to learn that her predecessor as companion had mysteriously disappeared, supposedly having run off with an unknown man.

But when the girl's body is found in the rubble of one of the recently demolished slums around the prestigious new railway station at St Pancras, Lizzie begins to wonder exactly what has been going on.

With the help of an old childhood friend, now Inspector Benjamin Ross, she starts to investigate, risking her life to unearth the truth about the death of a girl whose fate seems interlinked with her own.

A spellbinding Victorian crime mystery, perfect for fans of M. R. C. Kasasian and Susanna Calkins.

Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler is currently $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Crime fiction master Raymond Chandler's second novel featuring Philip Marlowe, the "quintessential urban private eye" (Los Angeles Times).

Philip Marlowe is about to give up on a completely routine case when he finds himself in the wrong place at the right time to get caught up in a murder that leads to a ring of jewel thieves, another murder, a fortune-teller, a couple more murders, and more corruption than your average graveyard.

Crosscut is a short story in the Joe Gunther series by Archer Mayor. I've not read this short story, but I have read and enjoyed most of the books in the series - it's quite a nice police procedural series IMO. Crosscut is free right now at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RHHNG2Q
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/crosscut-4

Spoiler:
Quote:
Crosscut is the very first short story from Archer Mayor's much-loved Joe Gunther series.

Going into the previously unexplored history of VBI Detective Sammie Martens, Archer Mayor reveals the story of how Sammie first met Joe Gunther and Willie Kunkel.

Sammie Martens, raised by a single mother in a chaotic household, returns home after leaving the Army only to have her mother's current boyfriend kick her out of the house. When her mother is arrested the next day on a charge of armed robbery, Sammie is convinced her mother's boyfriend set it up and is now up to no good. Warned to stay away by the seemingly uninterested police, Sammie does exactly the opposite and starts her own investigation.

I've quite enjoyed Deryn Lake's John Rawlings historical mystery series over the years, and the individual titles go on sale pretty often.

But there are also four omnibuses that comprise all of the sixteen titles in the series, four per omnibus. And right now, three of those four omnibuses (the first, second and fourth) are on Kindle Countdown in the US and UK, at $0.99/£0.99 each, for about five more days. That's $0.25/£0.25 per book, if you need them all!

Also, in the UK, the third one is not badly priced at £1.77, but sadly, in the US it's still full price at $5.99. Go figure!

Aunt Dimity Digs In is the fourth in the Aunt Dimity series by Nancy Atherton. I read quite a few of the early titles in this series back in paperback days, and enjoyed them, although I've kind of lost track of the series in the last few years. Digs In has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Titles in this series don't go on sale very often, so grab it if you want it...

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/aunt-dimity-digs-in

Spoiler:
Quote:
The latest in this enchanting and fast-selling series, featuring the beloved ghost Aunt Dimity, opens in a picturesque English cottage where the lovable Lori Shepherd is up to her elbows in pureed carrots and formula bottles, striving to be the perfect mother to twins! Luckily, a beautiful Italian nanny arrives just in time--so Lori can help settle the local civil war stirred up by a visiting archaeologist's excavation.

With Reginald, the stuffed pink rabbit and Edmond Terrance, the stuffed tiger in tow, Lori hunts down a missing document, and the archaeologist digs up a lot more than artifacts. It is Aunt Dimity's magic blue notebook that provides the key to buried secrets and domestic malice, and shows all the residents of Finch that even the darkest acts can be overcome by forgiveness.

In UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR, a heartwarming new Christmas short story featuring Tasha Alexander's beloved Victorian sleuth, Lady Emily and her husband, Colin, discover a clue in a Christmas cracker that leads to a true holiday miracle.

While most of London society has fled to their country estates for the holidays, Lady Emily and her family are enjoying a few days in the city. By the next day, her suspicions seem well-founded when a Scottish stranger arrives with a heartbreaking tale and an urgent plea for help. He believes his long-lost daughter, kidnapped by her well-meaning grandparents as an infant, may be hidden away somewhere in London. As Colin and Emily trace the clues through the city’s snowy streets, more mysterious crackers arrive to guide their investigation. But who is sending them? What do they mean? Emily and Colin must find the answers as they seek to reunite a father with his beloved daughter by Christmas Eve.
