Most people don't do what we do. And they don't have friends who do it. So the Jetbook is going to tank (IMHO) unless they add the ability to read DRM works. I know DRM is evil and should be avoided. But until DRM goes away, we have to put up with it. And the average non-technical person is going to need DRM or else s/he won't be able to read what s/he wants.

Sony has the eBookstore where people can purchase eBooks they can read.

Sure they can go to Gutenburg to get some eBooks. But, the majority of people want to read bestsellers or romance novels. The multiformat eBooks from Fictionwise are mostly from authors they will never have heard of. If you take a look at a lot of the top sellers it's romance sold to housewives. Most of them won't know about stripping DRM. They'll know they can purchase the eBooks and read them.

So without the ability to purchase current eBooks with DRM, I would say to stay well away from the Jetbook. The fact is, that for most people it is not a good fit at all.

I agree that the Jetbook would sell more devices in countries with well established ebook stores if they supported DRM. However, based on their web site, they are concentrating on free ebooks from the internet. From Comparison table of JetBook with closest rivals:

These sites almost certainly include bootlegged titles as well as public domain and creative commons titles.

Kris777: the book you gave a link for on Fictionwise is not Twilight, but a book called A Kiss of Ashen Twilight [Ashen Twilight Series Book One]. Completely different book. Twilight is only available in DRM format: http://www.fictionwise.com/eBooks/eBook48296.htm?cache.

Will current Jetbooks be able to upgrade to the new software? Fry's has a sale on the Jetbook this week and I was wondering about buying one now or waiting until the next sale after Apr 2nd. (After much debate and analysis, I decided the Jetbook, on sale, is a good, reasonalbly priced replacement for my REB1100)

Not the same eBook at all. Twilight only comes with DRM. So unless you strip off the DRM, it won't work with the Jetbook. That means the average person won't find the Jetbook useful. Imagine books you want to read, but cannot because DRM is in the way and the Jetbook does not support DRM. I know DRM is evil, but until DRM is removed, the people out there who do not know about DRM stripping are stuck with it and the Jetbook makes a poor fit for them. Their decision to go DRM free is going to harm them in the long run.

Was it their decision? I thought I read somewhere that Mobi DRM support was originally planned but Mobi pulled out and said no, or was that the EZ Reader.

Yes it was EZ Reader. As I remember they don't support any DRM too.

But, the EZ Reader can use the firmware from the V3 and other clones. So it's not too much a problem in that regard.
