Just finished A Fire Sparkling by Julianne Maclean. I'm not big on WW2 settings but this kept my attention!

Now I don't feel bad that I haven't got to this series yet.

My 5 star review of Parmesan Pizza Murder (Papa Pacelli's Pizzeria, #16), by Patti Benning:-

Spoiler:
Very good... very nice... I'm feeling very cozy. From the bare bones of a too short book, the writers managed to fix up a conundrum, solved in a believable way by the main character.

This I did not expect. I was feeling bored about the too obvious trail of the wrongdoer, but the authors surprised me once again.

I'll go even as far as to say that the quotes so popular online about books that made us live many lives at once apply to this booklet.

Two things are left to be said. One, I felt very bad about the victim. I don't care at all about Agatha Christie's dead, but here good people die. Secondly, the disappearing act of Nonna did not go unnoticed.

Finished this one yesterday. I enjoyed the author's world with talking trains. Non-stop action for much of the book. Indeterminate villain. Unexpected elements. A little sadness. Nice conclusion that leads into a sequel which I will put on my TBR list. Rated B [4 stars].

Next undecided but something from KU while my free trial is still active.

My 5 star rating of Three to Conquer, by Eric Frank Russell:-

Spoiler:
This was a well constructed tale about an invasion by aliens that is so silent, it escapes the nets of what people used to say Uncle Sam. The USA is alive and kicking in this book, so ardents of Panem won't be satiated.

Well, the book itself is very much grounded, walking the line between Sci Fi and the simple novel. There are only the baddies and the telepath to make this quite enthralling story a futuristic horror one.

The upbeat ending does not mesh with the chaos in the battle between alien and man. But we go along with the ride. I gave Three to Conquer a perfect score because of its battleground and its casualties, and its prophecy veering towards a caveat for mankind.

An enjoyable mystery. Recommended, especially for some of the descriptive language.

Next up: Gently Does It by Alan Hunter, which I got back in July 2013.

I finally got around to Butcher's Battle Ground, but Dresden is losing its appeal - none of the characters interest me much anymore. and the long battle quickly became tiresome. I'm ready to see the series wrapped up...

I enjoy Chandler's prose immensely. He is the embodiment of noir on the page, IMO.

I am also two books away from finishing up all the George Gently books that have been released in ebook format. It's been a fun ride, though a number of the titles have not aged well, especially in terms of depiction of gender and gender roles.

My 1 star review of The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2), by Brandon Sanderson:-

Spoiler:
This book is responsible for me to lose interest in the rest of the 4 Mistborn books. It was the beginning of Sanderson's dwindling goodwill in my eye.

I have read this book a couple of years ago. I still remember the disappointments of the story. Elend gaining superpowers did it for me.

I respect the fans' opinion, but I knew from reading this 2nd installment that the nadir of Sanderson, the Stormlight series would not jibe with me.

Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.

For what it's worth, I didn't care much for Mistborn 2 and 3 but I really like the Wax and Wayne series (Mistborn 4, 5, 6 so far.)

I just finished Barbarians at the Gates by Christopher G. Nuttall. This is the first of his Decline and Fall of the Galactic Empire Trilogy. I have had this on my TBR for a long time. I enjoyed it and give it 4 out of 5.
Now I am starting Fairhaven Rising 22 nd in the Saga of Recluce by L. E. Modesitt Jr.
