Another possibility is where you are. From memory, China blocks access to the Kobo site. And it is fairly common for businesses to block non-work sites.

@Thy: You need to enable Private Messaging. This is in the "Edit Options" of the control panel. If this isn't there, it has to be added somehow. You can try posting in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=319819 to ask it to be enabled, or contact a moderator.

So I'll share my own mistake so that others might find it useful.

I pulled the firmware from here link for firmware 3.19.5761

Then followed this link "Instructions for patching".

Anyway, I went straight to step #5 (on the link above) --- Copy the firmware - Koboroot.tgz to the .kobo directory of the Kobo Mini.

...and the Kobo Mini is now revived

Hope my mistake can be a lesson for newbies like me.

You can also sideload the latest firmware for the Glo, onto the Mini.

On the page I pointed to for downloading the firmware, there is a link to the instructions to install the firmware. It was labeled "Manually Install Firmware Guide" and pointed to https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...81&postcount=3. I remember looking to make sure the instructions were available from that page when I replied before.

The serial number in the image should be all zeros. It is fairly safe to use that use that as the serial number is only used for certain things. And some of those are no longer needed with the Mini. But, if you want to, the serial number is at offset 0x200. That starts with "SN-" and the serial number is after it. Most serial numbers start with the model number plus 12 or 13 digits. You can check the version file on the device to see the exact format.

hi! having the same problem @stoikoviro had and hoping i can get some guidance.
haven't used my kobo mini in years and just dusted it off & did a factory reset. when i try to set it up (both through the computer and wirelessly) i get the "Oops, something happened to your internet connection and we couldn't finish your setup" error message. i downloaded the firmware 3.19.5761 to try and fix this issue, but i feel a little stumped. the instructions say to "Copy the firmware - Koboroot.tgz to the .kobo directory" but when my kobo mini is connected to my computer (macbook pro 15" 2017), i see the KOBOeReader as a "location," meaning it's a connected device, but no folders within it. i don't understand where the ".kobo directory" is. when i copy the Koborootz.tgz file to the KOBOeReader location, then disconnect the device, nothing happens:

I'm still stuck in the same "something happened to your internet connection" loop

what am i doing wrong? thank you for reading!

By default the Mac is hiding folders / files that start with a period. Just do a quick Google search for "see hidden files mac" and then copy the file to the .kobo folder.
