Your posts are beating my ereaderiq alerts which seem to be falling down on the job.

I should also add that over the years I have purchased two copies of the first book in this series and Amazon currently doesn't recognize either one. Your warning about duplicates is right on the money.

It was part of today's Daily Deal, which I look at pretty much every day. So I saw it early this morning. eRiq alerts definitely run slow sometimes, and not at others, but I'm still hugely greatful for them. It can be really easy to see this when, for example, Kindle UK does one of their "Big Deals", where they put a bunch of titles by the same author on sale at the same time. And if I have that author on my eRiq list, the notices for the different books will come in anywhere from right away to many hours later.

I'm sure somebody on here can explain it better, but I assume it has something to do with how eRiq queries the prices ???? I assume they are not getting any sort of push notification from Amazon ??? I am clearly out of my expertise on the way it happens, I just know it happens !!!

Murder in the Dark is the 16th in Kerry Greenwood 's Phryne Fisher series, and it's $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US today, discountable at Kobo. As always with this series, watch for other editions and/or prior purchases.

Quote:
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix, starring Essie Davis as the honourable Phryne Fisher

"One of the most exciting and dangerous of the adventures into which Phryne's fabulous and risky lifestyle has led her" —Kirkus Reviews

It's Christmas, and Phryne has an invitation to the Last Best party of 1928, a four-day extravaganza being hosted at the Werribee Manor House by the Golden Twins, Isabella and Gerald Templar. Phryne is of two minds about going. But when threats begin arriving in the mail, she promptly decides to accept the invitation. No one tells Phryne Fisher what to do.

At the Manor House, she is accommodated in the Iris room. At the party she dallies with two polo-playing women, a Goat lady (and goat), a large number of glamourous young men, and an extremely rude child called Tarquin.

The acolytes of the golden twins are smoking hashish and dreaming. The jazz is hot and the drinks are cold. Heaven. Until three people are kidnapped, one of them the abominable child. Phryne must puzzle through the cryptic clues of the scavenger hunt to retrieve the hostages and save the party from further disaster.

P.S. This one did already pop up in my eRiq list too...

Miss Silver titles by Patricia Wentworth go on sale quite often so these are probably all repeats, but there are sixteen of them at $0.99 each today, if I counted right, and one at $1.99.

Link is to the series page (you might have to click at the bottom to get the entire list) because it was easier than copying all the separate urls.

I read Michael Crichton's first book (writing as himself, at least), The Andromeda Strain, when I was a kid, shortly after it came out, and I remember it was pretty scary then. I re-read it not too long ago and it was still scary now, since a good part of what made it scary was not just the details of the "bug", or the way old computer systems used to fail (although new ones fail too), but the human nature involved - and, for better or for worse, that doesn't change much. I've read some of Crichton's other books since, and although some of them are good, I didn't like any of them as much as this one. Anyway, long intro to say that The Andromeda Strain is $1.99 at Kindle US today, as part of the Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US.

Quote:
From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Sphere comes a captivating thriller about a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism, which threatens to annihilate human life.

Five prominent biophysicists have warned the United States government that sterilization procedures for returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. Two years later, a probe satellite falls to the earth and lands in a desolate region of northeastern Arizona. Nearby, in the town of Piedmont, bodies lie heaped and flung across the ground, faces locked in frozen surprise. What could cause such shock and fear? The terror has begun, and there is no telling where it will end.

Another first-in-series freebie from Poisoned Pen Press...

Murder at the Filmore is the first in the Virginia Holmes series by Zelda White. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK. Also, rather oddly for PPP, the rest of the titles in the series are $0.99 each, so if you like the first one, and want to read more, you're in luck! Even more oddly, this appears to be their regular price, and each of them (per eRiq) appears to have been free at least once in the last year or two, and several more often than that. This is quite odd behavior for PPP, but if you are patient, you might be able to pick up one or more additional titles for free. No guarantees, of course, and they could go up too!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FC7KYTC
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FC7KYTC

Spoiler:
Quote:
A murder has occurred at the Filmore Hotel, one of Madison, Wisconsin's most discreet lakeside resorts. It looks cut and dry: a suspect fleeing the scene, a scorned wife, a mythical murder weapon.

But then a retired detective by the name of Virginia Holmes arrives. There's more to this mystery than meets the eye ... and the murderer might still be inside the hotel.

I think I've mentioned at time or two that, although I love Elizabeth Peters's most popular Amelia Peabody series, I'm actually a tad fonder of both her Vicky Bliss and Jacqueline Kirby series. Now here's the first title in the Vicky Bliss series, Borrower of the Night, on sale for $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Meet art historian Vicky Bliss, She is as beautiful as she is brainy--with unassailable courage, insatiable curiosity, and an expertise in lost museum treasures that often leads her into the most dangerous of situations.

A missing masterwork in wood, the last creation of a master carver who died in the violent tumult of the sixteenth century, may be hidden in a medieval German castle in the town of Rothenburg. The prize has called to Vicky Bliss, drawing her and an arrogant male colleague into the forbidding citadel and its dark secrets. But the treasure hunt soon turns deadly. Here, where the blood of the long forgotten damned stains ancient stones, Vicky must face two equally perilous possibilities. Either a powerful supernatural evil inhabits this place. . .or someone frighteningly real is willing to kill for what Vicky is determined to find.

If, like me, you drool at the food in Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti series, here's something a little different: Brunetti's Cookbook by Roberta Pianaro and Donna Leon has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US. I bought this a while back, and although I'm not much of a cook (I'd rather be cooked for ), I have enjoyed the couple of recipes that I tried. It's also just fun to read the little extras that Leon has provided.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003OYIG0A
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B003OYIG0A

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Fans of Donna Leon’s mysteries set in Venice and starring her cosmopolitan detective, Commissario Guido Brunetti, will be delighted to have this cookbook” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

Aside from their puzzling mysteries, Donna Leon’s novels featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti have long been celebrated for their mouth-watering descriptions of food: multicourse lunches at home with Paola and the children, snacks grabbed at a bar with a glass of wine or two, a quick sandwich during a busy day, or a working lunch at a neighborhood trattoria in the course of an investigation have all delighted Brunetti, as well as Leon’s readers and reviewers.

In Brunetti’s Cookbook, Leon’s best friend and favorite cook Roberta Pianaro brings to life these fabulous Venetian meals. Eggplant crostini, orrechiette with asparagus, pumpkin ravioli, roasted artichokes, baked branzino, pork ragu with porcini these are just a few of the over ninety recipes for antipasti, primi, secondi, and dolci.

The recipes are joined by excerpts from the novels, four-color illustrations, and six original essays by Donna Leon on food and life in Venice. Charming, insightful, and full of personality, they are the perfect addition to this “enticing” volume of delicious delights (The New York Times Book Review).

It must be the season...

Santa Fe Flavors, by Anne Hillerman, has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and it's discountable at Kobo.

Per the blurb, Hillerman apparently was a restaurant critic before (and maybe while) continuing her father's Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series. I don't remember much food in either her or her father's books, and certainly not drooling over it as above ^^^, but this still looks like fun.

Quote:
The New York Times bestselling author and restaurant critic takes readers on a foodie tour of Santa Fe—complete with recipes from more than 50 restaurants.

A city known for fine dining, Santa Fe boasts many wonderful restaurants, from famous gourmet establishments to delicious mom-and-pop diners. In Santa Fe Flavors, restaurant critic Anne Hillerman takes connoisseurs on a whirlwind tour through some of the city’s most delectable eateries. Along with recommendations on where to find truly memorable meals, Hillerman also provides diners the chance to re-create some of their favorite dishes with recipes contributed by restaurant chefs.

Hillerman takes readers inside more than fifty restaurants, introducing both celebrated and undiscovered chefs. Featured restaurants include Bobcat Bites, El Farol, The Pink Adobe, Blue Heron at Sunrise Springs, Coyote Cafe, Geronimo, Trattoria Nostrani, and more.

I've read almost all of the books in Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series, and have quite liked them. They do go on sale pretty often, but now here's a box set of the first three for $1.99 at both Kindle and Kobo US. If you don't already have any of these, and want to give this nice historical series (with a bit of romance) a try, this is a great price for the three!

Titles in the box set include: Silent in the Grave, Silent in the Sanctuary, and Silent on the Moor.

Rediscover New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn’s beloved Lady Julia Grey mystery stories, and be swept up in a Victorian world of intrigue in the first three novels, together in a value box set.

Silent in the Grave

The darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives threatening letters from an unknown source. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home. Determined to bring her husband’s murderer to justice, the late Sir Edward’s wife Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward’s demise, following a trail of clues that lead her to ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

Silent in the Sanctuary

Fresh from a trip to Italy, Lady Julia returns to Sussex to find her father’s estate crowded with family and friends. Much to her surprise, the one man she had hoped to forget—the enigmatic and compelling Nicholas Brisbane—is among the houseguests. But the homecoming celebrations quickly take a ghastly turn when one of the guests is found brutally murdered. Lady Julia resumes her unlikely and deliciously intriguing partnership with Nicholas Brisbane, setting out to unravel a tangle of deceit before the killer can strike again.

Silent on the Moor

In Grimsgrave Hall, Nicholas Brisbane has inherited a ruined estate, replete with uncanny tenants and one unwanted houseguest: Lady Julia Grey. Lady Allenby and her daughters, dependent upon Brisbane and devastated by their fall in society, seem adrift, powerless to change their fortunes. But poison does not discriminate between classes, and a mystery unfolds from the rotten heart of Grimsgrave. Lady Julia may have to solve this particular one alone, as Brisbane appears inextricably tangled in its heinous twists and turns. But blood will out, and before spring comes, Lady Julia will have uncovered a long-buried legacy of malevolence and evil.

Kindle UK does a monthly sale where many mysteries drop in price to £0.99, or sometimes a little bit more. Many of the books go on sale all the time, and lots of them are from Kindle’s own publishing arm, Thomas and Mercer. But there are also occasional gems from the “big publisher”, or books from small publishers that don’t go on sale very often. There are 351 books in this month’s sale, and here’s a link to the sale page: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?i=digital...31&ref=sr_pg_1

But since 351 books is a lot to look though, I’ve also picked out a bunch of titles that I like, and/or that I recognize, even if they are not totally to my taste (that’s mostly the thrillers). Here’s that list, but clearly YMMV, so take a look at the whole sale too, if you want!
