If you don't go for a 10.3" Reader, then the next best Reader is the Kobo Forma with an 8" screen. You can install KOReader to read the PDF better then the stock software.

Though a 7.8" Lifebook Mars is cheaper than a Kobo Forma in Ireland via online and has a very good PDF reader, but I installed koreader on it for epubs. The Google Android framework can be turned on or off, but not all playstore apps work sensibly on eink. Borrowbox and Google Playbooks are OK, Kobo and Kindle install, but I've not tested them yet. My favorite Android Solitaire is unusable, but Jota note editor works fine with BT keyboard or virtual touch. The jack socket or BT earphones work for music player or audio books. Google Playbooks and Playstore vanish when Framework is off. The koreader needs downloaded (direct with built in browser) rather than ancient version in the Boyue App Store.

I do still use the Kobo Libre for epub annotation. It's the best and best value 7". I have a Kindle PW3 and have used the PW4 which IMO is inferior to PW3 unless you need BT audio. PW3 does work with a €6 USB audio stick and €4 adaptor with extra Amazon SW download.

The Kobos work best for collections and series and also with Calibre (two choices for Annotation/Bookmark/Highlight to PC/Laptop).

The Onyx devices are also very fast and handle PDFs with no problems whatsoever; I also browse the web with it, reading forum discussions, etc.

For your use case, I'd probably recommend a bigger screen. It is possible to read PDFs in landscape mode on the Nova 3, but it's not an optimal experience. It's good enough for me, since I don't read that many and the ones I do read don't contain graphs.

I would recommend you to watch My Deep Guide and his videos about the devices that interest you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grqBdJ86HWo (Pocketbook InkPad X)

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdQ5sXTJRMI (Onyx Boox Note Air).

Personally, I would get an Onyx device if you are reading PDFs. The other readers are just too slow in comparison. Reading PDFs on a Kindle is a nightmare; the Pocketbook seems better in this regard, but still far from the speed of the Onyx ones.

On the other hand they are more expensive. I bought mine from ereader.store when they had a special offer (they have them from time to time - worth checking out).

Watched your review about Pocketbook InkPad X, damn, all my dreams about fantastic device dissapeared :/

Just started to watch about Onyx

I have Likebook Alita and Boox Note Air:
Likebook devices are far superior to Boox devices in terms of file system (USB-OTG) and they have an SD connection - I use a 500 GB card.
I don't need the slightly stronger hardware of the Boox devices and more drawing features (triangle, circle, rectangle).
I use the Note Air in landscape format as an outside office internet computer.

I know that. And i prefer open OS. Most important is that device should receive updates and have a availability of asoftware and is not locked in own one app.
So looks like, i should monitor market for next 1-3 months
