New ebook reader

Hello,

Quick search didnt give anything useful.
Im looking for my first device, and main consideration is OS.
Is here any preferences why to choose linux based device, or android device, maybe some proprietary?
About size its clear to me it's 7" or bigger screen.

Content - at the moment i have bunch of epub, pdf and kindle ebooks, some legal, some from dark internet corners
Content have a pretty much illustrations, kind of graphs, tables.
Devices which i looked on - Pocketbook inkpad 3 pro(new colored version coming soon, as i know), kindle oasis 3, Onyx boox air and even remarkable2. But would be nice to stay under 400EUR.

Any recemmendations, pros-cons about os are welcome.

I personally prefer to talk about specific devices and not operating systems or brands. Each device has different characteristics, even within the same operating system or brand. And, honestly, I believe that each of the current major brands have high quality devices. I leave the "professional" debate to others. As a user (of different brands and different operating systems) I would advise you to choose the one that comes closest to what you are looking for. Of the ones you have mentioned the Onyx Boox I believe will allow you to successfully display any of the formats you normally use. Not that it is better or worse than a PocketBook or a Kindle. It's just that you'll be able to read ePub, PDF and Amazon files without having to do anything special.

What features do you want? That's important in making a recommendation.

As a technical guy, i like to know what is under hood and how it works. So, to me OS is kinda important but not allways, as a linux user i like everything with linux and actually not a fan of Android, but android is on my TV as a best tv os, so you understand. And all things which are related to ebooks user expirience for me is not known yet? I don know what to expect from them. At the moment main task is to be able read and probably audiobooks

Kobo is coming out with a new Reader something this year. We don't know much about it other then 32GB of storage an bluetooth. It's the one I'm waiting to find out more about it.

One of the things is that the Linux based Readers can have better stock Reading software then the Android based ones.

Some Readers do not allow you to listen to audiobooks. You can with an Android based Reader as you can install the audible app or the Libby app (Overdrive) to listen to audiobooks if the device supports audio.

Kobo, Pocketbook, Boyue, Ony Boox, Tolino, Kindle, B&N are all brands of Readers.

Before a recommendation can be made, where is it you live? That helps limit what's possible based on availability.

I'm From Latvia. If looking at availability easies to get is a pocketbook, and kindle. Some Onyx Boox are available. But all they are on preorder with delivery 2-3 weeks. Amazon.de is probably with fastest available shipping.

Which devices runs on linux?

In order of ease of accessing the Linux install:
  1. Kobo
  2. Pocketbook
  3. Amazon Kindle eInk (though Lab126 seems to moving to a partial implementation of Android and accessing the Linux install is not possible on all models.

PocketBook Germany has good offers for Valentine's Day. If you live in Europe you can buy their devices at a good price:

InkPad X: 325 €.
InkPad 3 Pro: 209 €.
InkPad 3: 178 €.

I took advantage of a Christmas offer for the InkPad X (288 € + 2 covers + free shipping to Spain) and I am very happy with the device.

I hardly notice the difference. I hardly use the inkPad 3 (300 DPI). The InkPad X has a beautiful screen. I use it with KOReader, both for PDFs and ePubs (two-column, landscape mode). It is a pleasant reading experience.

I have a 7.8" Onyx Boox Nova 3, which is great for reading novels. The pros with using an Android device is that I can install any reader software I want and combine it with several different dictionaries (I read in several languages, so dictionaries are important to me). The Onyx devices are also very fast and handle PDFs with no problems whatsoever; I also browse the web with it, reading forum discussions, etc.

For your use case, I'd probably recommend a bigger screen. It is possible to read PDFs in landscape mode on the Nova 3, but it's not an optimal experience. It's good enough for me, since I don't read that many and the ones I do read don't contain graphs.

I would recommend you to watch My Deep Guide and his videos about the devices that interest you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grqBdJ86HWo (Pocketbook InkPad X)

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdQ5sXTJRMI (Onyx Boox Note Air).

Personally, I would get an Onyx device if you are reading PDFs. The other readers are just too slow in comparison. Reading PDFs on a Kindle is a nightmare; the Pocketbook seems better in this regard, but still far from the speed of the Onyx ones.

On the other hand they are more expensive. I bought mine from ereader.store when they had a special offer (they have them from time to time - worth checking out).
