Well, an SD card is quite a bit smaller and lighter than a netbook. So in one case you have [cord plus netbook] and in the other [cord plus SD card]; a clear win in terms of weight and bulk, though I grant you the cord is kind of inconvenient to haul around.

My concern is that 1) I'm not sure it's possible to power the SD card reader through the micro USB end of the cord and 2) I'm not sure the cord is wired up to let you suck data out the micro USB end instead of the standard USB end.

When I first got my K2 I load on about 2000 books just to see what would happen. I completely filled the memory and had to remove a number of books because the index file kept growing. After 4 or 5 days it still hadn't finished indexing I was tired of no battery life so I deleted everything and only loaded around 100 titles.

BTW, if you run out of memory and Amazon wants to download a file to your Kindle, they will send you an email telling you to delete some files to make room.

Well, it's easy to carry the cable than the notebook. But even then, you don't even have to have a cable; it would be simply to just create an SD-to-microUSB plug as all one unit.

I think it had a lot more to do with customer service issues than cost or form factor. Card slots are cheap and don't take up much room. It's certainly less expensive than adding the increased on board memory. However, a lot of non-technical people are phobic about figuring out which card they want and installing it. One of my aunties actually bought a new digital camera because it had more memory rather than just get a freakin card for her old one. We here are fine with it. We also generally don't mind transferring files via USB but I've known quite a few folks that are afraid of that, too.

Also, one of the issues in the old system is that Whispernet only delivers to the built in memory. The small amount of on board memory in the K1 filled up fast and then the deliveries bounced. I'm sure this led to many CS requests and complaints. They probably figured it made more sense to just add more on board memory and ditch the slot. Personally I'd rather they fixed firmware to be able to deliver to an SD card. However, if they were getting resistance from those customers who want it to "just work" about adding memory, maybe they figured it was easier to eliminate the question altogether.

Yes, exactly, only with a micro USB instead of standard. That would be a lot easier to carry than a cord.
