After the Big Deal sale a couple of months ago, when Kindle UK had a bunch of George Orwell titles on sale for £0.99 each, now there is an omnibus with several titles in one volume on sale as part of today's Daily Deal, for £1.99. If you've bought George Orwell titles in the past, you'll need to check carefully, but this might still be a good deal, even if you don't need them all.

The Complete Novels of George Orwell contains Animal Farm, Burmese Days, A Clergyman's Daughter, Coming Up for Air, Keep the Aspidistra Flying, and Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's a Penguin edition, so probably not bootleg.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-No...dp/B004LLIHCC/
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Complete-...dp/B004LLIHCC/

Spoiler:
Quote:
'The greatest writer of the twentieth century' Observer

George Orwell's best-known novels, Animal Farm, describing a revolution that goes horribly wrong, and Nineteen Eighty-Four, portraying a world where human freedom has been crushed, are two of the most famous, well-quoted and influential political satires ever written. The other novels in this volume also tell stories of people at odds with repressive institutions: the corrupt imperialism of Burmese Days, disaffection with materialistic society in Keep the Aspidistra Flying, the perils of modern suburban living in Coming Up for Air and surviving on the streets in A Clergyman's Daughter.

All the novels brought together here display Orwell's humour, his understanding of human nature and his great compassion.

George Orwell died in 1950. All his works are in the public domain in the UK now.

But the Penguin edition probably has good versions of the texts.

YES!

Now, this is Literature! And he's a better writer than his 'Old Man' - in my opinion.

Stylistically, I'd say no. But his endings are WAAAAY more satisfying.

I've read Heart Shaped Box which I didn't like at all and the first book of Locke and Key, which I liked more.

I did enjoy the movie they made of Horns and the Locke and Key series on Netflix.

But so far, I prefer Steve to Joe (though to be fair, Steve got a multi-decade head start).

Again £0.99 at Kindle UK. Link below is still good.

There was an omnibus of Steinbeck's "short fiction" on sale in the US a while back at a really great price, and Cannery Row was part of that, so if you travel, check carefully before you buy!

(Although East of Eden still is my Steinbeck favorite.)

I understand. I love both their writings.

And Stephen (I'm pretending we're on a first-name basis), won an O. Henry Award for the year's best short story some time back. And he has also been honored with many national awards. He definitely belongs in the Fiction forum, but I wouldn't be surprised to find him in Horror or Sci-Fic. He might even turn up in Religion some day (heaven forbid*).

* Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm hoping Stevie gets a Presidential Medal Of Freedom. There wasn't much chance of that with the last administration, but things are different now.

I do think over the decades King has contributed to American culture and there's his philanthropy as well.

(Unrelated, but the stories of Dolly Parton and the Medal of Freedom are heartwarming.)

Now (finally) $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, only a few months after it went on sale in the UK...

It's not the most recent any more (The Emperor's Exile came out in Nov 2020), but still nice to see it on sale for a good price.

I've loved this series, starting with back when it was more of a historical mystery series set in a military setting, right up to now, when it seems to me more like a military/political historical series, with the dead bodies more related to the military/political goings-on than to classic mystery themes. But even though I'm mostly a mystery fan, I still love this series. And I have very fond memories of reading the early ones to my son, who was a huge military history buff from a young age, and being happy that I found a series we both liked!

Yeeeeah, no. Gonna have to disagree there, bubba. Joe is good, but Stephen King's body of work is considerably greater and has a broader range stylistically speaking.
