Am I to understand I MUST connect my Kindle to an XP box, and can not connect it to my Vista laptop? Bummer, if understood correctly.

Not at all. The Kindle will mount on XP/Vista/Win7/Mac/Linux PCs.

I think they were saying the Mobipocket v6.0 doesn't recognize the Kindle2 in Vista.

I'm a bit red faced I read a bit of this thread at the beginning and skipped to the end. My missunderstanding about vista was covered in length with posts that I had not read.

For me, it's about my fair use rights. And I'm going with that. It is fair use (IMHO) to strip the DRM so I can format shift the content I've legally purchased. I will not allow the DMCA to get in my way and prevent me from using content that I've legally purchased the way I want/need as long as I'm not uploading it to the net.

And no one is going to challenge that, because the damages are zilch! So long as you don't transfer the book, and don't teach others how to do it. And I'm sure you do neither!

At the very least, I can't imagine Amazon being stupid enough to really go after someone using KindlePID/KindleFix to read legally acquired (purchased or library) books. A case like that could very well backfire on them.

The DMCA is a "copyright protection" act, but violating it is not the same as infringing on copyrights. Otherwise, the penalties would be much lighter--copying for personal use with no financial gain is not illegal in the US; you're free to make a copy of something you own for your own use. If the DMCA were treated the same, it'd be entirely legal and non-controversial to have a program that removes DRM from your own property for private use, just like it's legal to copy a TV show onto a VCR tape to watch it later.

Cracking DRM doesn't violate anyone's copyrights; it's tied to a different law, that's supposed to support copyrights, but has entirely different penalties from copyright infringement.

I am starting to feel like a leper having bought a kindle 2.0. I may have to return it.

It looks like all of the moral arguments are on the side of anti-amazon, anti-DRM, anti-Kindle, and the only arguments on the other side are self-interested to the point of being selfish.

Is there no one ANYWHERE who has launched even a semi-compelling ethical defense of DRM?

The ethical argument for DRM is to preserve the rights of authors to be paid for their work. Which is why some authors are pro-DRM.

Well, one possible argument but there is no right to be paid for arbitrary work.

Another possible argument would be that DRM stimulate creative work and the disadvantaged of DRM is less then the gain in new work produced.

But it is quite possible to be very much pro-authors and their right to payment, yet also very pro-consumer (and anti-DRM). And many authors understand this. Even a few publishers do!

Still, Amazon threatens users who posts or links to these scripts with DMCA action. The real bucks have always been in the selling of services and content, but I think their CEO wants more. He wants to be remembered as the godfather of electronic book readers.

Well, he could be remembered as the killer of electronic book readers. If I was looking at a Kindle for the first time now, and knew that I would be restricted to Amazon and purchase of books (no library), I would stick with pbooks.

As would I. If I couldn't strip DRM or purchase books without DRM, I wouldn't have purchased a reading device.

I would not have purchased a Kindle without being able to read my existing library of hundreds of previously purchased Mobi (and eReader, for that matter) books.
