Thanks for doing this!
But... can it read .ACSM files? If not, what would you use it for?
ReactOS emulated is certainly "usable", but you wouldn't want to have it as your OS for reading, I assure you. Although the Kobo is capable of emulating it at a surprising speed, it still takes ~ 20 minutes to boot, which is not that bad, but not that great either.

My idea at the beginning was to install ADE to read external acsm files gotten with Firefox in Xorg from a virtual disk, then ADE would download them as ePUB and somehow we could work out how to get that out of the VM and back to the internal storage device.

I just installed Reader from the link provided, under wine (5.0, Mint 20.1), and it worked fine.

I've never been a customer of Sony eBooks but all I needed to do was enter my Adobe Id and then I could load an ASCM and it downloaded the file for me. I tried one from kobo and one from ebooks.com and both worked.

ISTM the main issue with the age of the RMDSK used would be the rendering in the Reader software itself but once the file has been downloaded you can read it elsewhere, in another app registered to the same id or in a physical reader - which is the goal here.

Whilst this is fun project I would never use it in anger, 20mins is too long to wait to download a book, when there are already ways you can buy, borrow direct from the device. Admittedly you are limited to the Kobo store but that's still not bad.

Personally I use COPS to make my Calibre library available and that works with the native browsers on all my devices. That does mean I have to do my purchasing when I'm at my PC - but that's not such a hardship.

But as I said, fun project, great to see the progress you're making!

Thanks for your insight on this. If you say it's as simple as entering your Adobe ID and downloading the book from an ACSM file, then maybe I'll try in ReactOS. Any special requirements for .NET? Or it just works standalone?
Thanks

It appears to be using QT rather than .NET. I set it up in a new WINEPREFIX and I didn't need to install any other pre-reqs, and .NET can be tricky in wine.

In fact I might start using this as my preferred method of downloading Adobe DRM'd epubs.

Well, pretty good! I'll try it in ReactOS very soon!
(actually, if this runs in Wine and is simpler to set up, then I might have, me too, discovered a way not to depend anymore on MacOS for downloading DRM'd books, but using only Linux ...)

And... it failed.
"Your computer must be running at least Windows XP." I'm not an expert in Windows things (although I have great skills in Linux, when it comes to Windows, well... I can't do much).
Now maybe I'll try TinyCore Linux with Wine. If that works, it may be faster than ReactOS.

The issue is that in some places, the ePub will not download because the version of RMSDK is too old. You need ADE 2.0.1 to be sure of downloading everything you want. Plus, the Sony software is bloatware for your use.

Thanks for the concern. However I tried the two places where I routinely buy epubs and they both work.

I guess I'll find out. I still have ADE to fall back on.

I suppose it's bloatware in the sense that I don't need the reader part, but then I don't use the reader part of ADE either. And since there isn't a stand-alone piece of software that just downloads the epub from an ascm file that's not a point in either's favour.

And actually the Sony Reader wine prefix directory is less than a third the size of the ADE one. But I'll keep both - why wouldn't I?

Is that ADE prefix directory for ADE 2.0.1? If it's for any newer version, then it is going to be larger. If all you do is download ePub, then ADE 2.0.1 is what you need.

Yes 2.0.1.

Anyway let's allow the thread to go back on topic.
