Back to Delphi's Maurice LeBlanc omnibus, reading 813 at the moment. The story is interesting, if convoluted, but almost every single piece of dialog ends with an ellipsis. It's presumably intended to convey the idea of interrupted, incomplete conversations, but the visual effect of dozens of them on every page is almost excruciating. I'm actually skim reading as fast as I can hoping that the next story in the collection is not similarly afflicted

Unless you don't have a better book to read, I'd advise you to ditch Lupin because it's simply not worth it. IMHO.

It's my page count booster. I'm not reading it exclusively, just taking my time so that by the time I've finished it, the 4845 pages will help raise my average after lots o 250-page mysteries and romances

Good enough logic, but 'good luck' still sticks in my throat. Up to you to read what you want and why you want, though.

The other reason I started it was that I intend watching Lupin No Musume, and wanted to read the stories which inspired the drama. Finishing the omnibus won't be that much of a hardship if I only read 50-100 pages a day, I'll be done in 2-3 months while enjoying plenty of other books in the same period. While overall I'd agree with your assessment, there are some elements that I've enjoyed. Especially in "813" Lupin's having to deal with the consequences of his previously impregnable hubris and self-assurance were a pleasant surprise. Also, the omnibus apparently has a few non-Lupin works, which could be interesting to check out.

My 2 star review of Fleshmarket Close (Inspector Rebus #15), by Ian Rankin :-

Spoiler:
This was a reread. It proved to be a night and day experience, the reread being the night. It does have some professionally installed bells and whistles, but made for pretty raw and rough reading.

Rebus is too much the gallant knight in shining armour. He gets the best lines, probably to the detriment of any other Detective in the book. The hero - for that he is - shouldn't exist in the world created by Rankin. It jolts yours truly to fit in the misfit.

It was a slog finishing this book. Never again will I reread a thriller that I touched upon in the Dark Days, when the internet for my country was a privilege for the few and at a time Stephen King was trying to bypass the publishers to reach out electronically.

But yeah. Fleshmarket Close was a wretched experience. The best aspect was the discovery of unfamiliar words, all of them coined 'familiar' by the dictionary. My next read has not a lot to live up to. Toodle-oo for now.

Sounds like one to give a miss.

Still on The Lost Princess of Mona by Guy Donovan. It's well on it's way to 5 stars! Highly recommended to any Fantasy readers but it's worth reading the prequel first so you get right to the dragons, Of Dragons and Men.

I think it's The Forgotten Princess of Mona.

And I'm STILL working my way through this. I think it's been years since I took this long on a book. Probably why I'm not such a big non-fiction fan

“Page count booster”? Um why do you feel that you need to boost your page count?

You really should just read for enjoyment, and not to boost your numbers or number of books read. I’ve never understood why people get obsessed with that.

I DO read for fun, and tracking my page count is part of that. I only read ebooks, which makes page counts utterly irrelevant - no matter what some here would say, pages don't count on an e-reader. Which is exactly why counting them is fun for me, and I try to count as many as I can.

I finally finished One by One by Ruth Ware. It started out really slow to me but around halfway through it turned into a half decent mystery. I usually like Ruth Ware but this one wasn't her best. And I never seen the word funicular so much!!!

Next up is Star Trek Agents of Influence by Dayton Ward.

Ah, I see. That’s cool. As long as you enjoy yourself, I suppose, it’s all good.
