It might be worth trying an older version of Sigil, I'll let the Sigil experts suggest which version and provide a link. BR |

The Sigil installer requires SP1 on Windows 7. At least it's supposed to (and used to). I don't have any test machines without it to verify. It's typically video drivers and Qt that determine whether or not the latest Sigil will work on Windows 7. This Python error has me baffled.

Did Sigil ever run on pre SP1 Windows 7? Might it be worth trying 0.9.14 or 0.8.7?

For sure, yes. It was the change to Python 3.5 that made SP1 a requirement on Windows 7 for Sigil. Well technically it was the 2015 VC++ runtime that Python 3.5 required which made SP1 the minimum required (and also ended Sigil support on Windows XP).
I remember because I had to manually bump it up to SP1 after an issue where Sigil installed fine without SP1, but the required VC++ runtime couldn't be successfully installed afterward. No runtime, no python. No python, no Sigil. |

As for what older version to try, I'd probably start with 0.9.14. If that won't run. I'd try the latest version of my legacy fork of Sigil (0.9.13) at https://github.com/dougmassay/legacy-sigil/releases

Whoa! You guys have been busy this morning. Let me update you and then I'll read through all of your posts.
Not sure why the links were not working for the update, buuuut I did something odd and was able to download it. I copied the link url and pasted it into another window. Ran the update and got something after a long arse wait saying that it couldn't perform making the update. ![]() But just before coming here to update everyone, I had an idea to test. I right-clicked an epub file of some top seller's book and asked it be opened with Sigil. Although, I can still do nothing and have the exact same symptom, Sigil did pop up with that book loaded. Have a look. Not sure if that's helpful or not. |

Interesting. That kind of blows my Windows update theory out of the water. The version of Python that comes with that version of Sigil (Python 3.7.2) is supposed to require the same hotfix that 3.8 does.
0.9.14 working for you would suggest that the issue is Qt/WebEngine related -- but then those python errors!... I'm afraid I'm a bit baffled. If 0.9.14 works for your needs, great! But there were a lot of performance issues that people complained about with the version of QtWebKit that was shipping with it. If it proves to be too clunky and slow, you may want to try the official 0.9.10 release. Or better yet, my legacy 0.9.13 fork should provide all of the same features as the official 0.9.14, but should perform much better on aging OSes/hardware. EDIT: it appears the original KB2533623 update (for Python 3.7/3.8 support) was superseded by the Windows 7 KB3063858 Security Update which is still available from Microsoft.
