DAG: They are admiting there is a problem. They have had mine since Feb 2 2009, and all I know is "A replacment has been ordered" for me.

Oh my, sounds like quite a nightmare to me. I ordered one a few days ago and it is on this way here

Actually, this isn't such big problem unless you are using the LED lights right?

Muse: With the lights off and reading in my easy chair with the lamp on it's clear as a bell. I just happen to also like reading in bed in the dark.

Thats the same for me. The LED light was one of the reasons I chose it over the 505, which most people seem to favour.

I ordered mine a few day ago. Now, I cant help but to feel I might have made the wrong choice, even with all the new features. As I am shipping it all the way to Hong Kong, returns/warranty will be difficult and costly.

Well, maybe its not bad as a first reader. Just hope mine isnt a lemon

No flies on me and no dust on my screen ! Sorry to hear about your troubles, you must have had a defective device. Every product ever made has had one or two defectives, I would imagine...
Just your bad luck that it happened to you. I hope it all gets sorted out quickly so that you can go back to !

Dragonbone; Thanks. I'm reading on an EBW1150 now so that's why I have stopped my constant complaints here. It keeps me sane.

i don't know if this was suggested before - but i had the same problems about 10 years ago with an ipaq - i 'cleaned' the display by using a vacuum cleaner - try hold the thing where the air is sucked in tight to every possible opening of the reader if the display isn't airtight the dust should come out. at least it is worth a try...

I tired a can of air to try to move the dust, but I couldn't get it moving.

Thats good to hear, for both of us

If it happens to me, I will probably be devastated.
But so far, I dont think its a wide spread problem

Btw, according to igorsk, he said the screen is airtight. Or am I outdated?

I thought mine was OK but I got a little paranoid after reading this thread so I took a closer look - and sure enough - specks of dust under the screen

They're only visible with the sidelights on, and they seem to be between the touchscreen and display layers; the display assembly itself should be airtight but I'm guessing that the addition of the sidelights also introduced a design flaw that allowed dust to get in during the manufacturing process. Fingers crossed that it doesn't get worse...

I called sony today since I hadn't heard anything since Feb 23'rd. They had recieved a replacment and I was able to pick it up today.

I already notice a dust speck in the screen with the lights on on the right against the edge.

I am ignoring it until it gets bad again at which point I'll just take it back in until they are sick of me. I am so disapointed I may just quickly read teh three books I bought from teh Sony store before I returned this and then sell it.

The way I see it...

This is unfortunate. I was hoping you would've received Rev. B
of the 7Series where the production line would have made
some modifications to correct the problem on the assembly.
Obviously not the case in your case. Perhaps your repeated
calls forced them to pull one from old inventories due to the
delays?

This reminds me of a time when I read about people who bought
laptops or LCD displays and found bad or stuck pixels. Very
insignificant but there. Manufactures say 1-2 pixels is 'normal'
in terms acceptable level of quality control. The flecks of dust
is more about QC than a generic 'defect' and because of the
isolation, the cost of salvaging a few of the afflicted vs. a core
production modification might not be warranted or justified.
ie. a business decision.

Well I hadn't called them in over a month. Feb 23'rd was the last call, I called yesterday just for an update and they said "We just got a shipment in an hour ago. Give us 1/2 hour and you can come pick it up".

No big deal, I'm going to read teh books I bought from the Sony store and the PDF's I have collected and if the dust issue doesn't come back then I will list it for sale. If it does come back I'll send it back into Sony.

Actually, I think this dust issue is quite wide spread among mobile phones. I got it right on my Nokia E51, and its quite a large group at the bottom.

Anyway is this considered a manufacturing defect of some sort?
Cause, where I am, the after sales service isnt as good as in the states.
