If you're willing to use a proprietary format, why would you want to use a proprietary format from a small merchant rather than a proprietary format from a large one? Especially when the small merchants proprietary format/app limits you in the number of platforms you can use it on more so than the larger merchants offering?

Boo on proprietary formats. Boo on software sold as Lifetime that has a Key.
3 of the ebook shops I started with are GONE. (They were ADE based, so not all lost)

One of my favorite PAID Audio disk ripping & splitting SW is gone (I assumed the author died with no fallback for existing custs)

I loved Jim Baens attitude of DRM free.
Let us face it. Most DRM schemes will be cracked in the end. So the money spent getting the DRM done is probably just poured down a rat hole.

Did it change recently? Or have you "moved on" from SF?

Me, I buy my BAEN ebooks direct so the money goes to Baen and the authors and nobody else. They treat me fair, I treat them fair.

I'm no fan of DRM but it doesn't rile me up as much as app-locked content.
Some walled gardens are tolerable (barely) because the distributor can reasonably be expected to outlast me.

But app-locked content I won't look at twice. None of those ebook operations have endured past a year or two, anyway.

I won't buy eBooks I cannot remove the DRM from. Right now, I can buy from Amazon and ePub from Kobo, Google, and eBooks.com

Jim died quite a while back. Baen the publisher still does DRM free.

Sorry, I didn't see this until just now. I was more just sharing the internals in case there was anyone here that wanted to try cracking MyMustReads, not trying to say people should support one or the other. I was curious if there might be someone here with better DRM-cracking technical chips than I.

What are the odds they licensed someone else's "solution" to this problem that doesn't actually exist?

The problem is that this is currently uncrackable DRM. There is no solution. I'm not sure why you feel the need to be snarky here.

Yes, people can choose to buy their e-books from Amazon, Google, Apple, etc, and crack that DRM, but what if they'd like to support their local bookstore instead? Is there currently any e-book purchasing option that supports your local bookstore, and also allows me to crack the DRM?

Hive.co.uk, or the US solution that came to the UK last year (whose name escapes me). Hive uses ADE downloads, and provided you have ADE 2 (or possibly 3), the DRM can be stripped.

Hive actually has SFF titles not available on Amazon.co.uk, so I've dropped some money their way in the past few months.

No such thing as uncrackable as the guy with the lego robot (to swipe the screen), computer and hires camera photographing after page turns proved. Even easier to automate if it's a computer / tablet app.

DRM is to control the consumer. It's never ever worked to stop piracy. Piracy and DRM are wrong.

I meant like, a piece of software. For example, ADE is a DRM "solution".

The snark is that if they did this, the software solves a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Are you saying that hive.co.uk is using the hardened DRM found in ADE 4.x?

No, unless the file they receive from the publisher has it (which I believe is more often for non-fiction like textbooks). I've stuck with ADE 2.0, and all the fiction files I've purchased and downloaded from Hive have successfully been disinfected. I don't normally buy non-fiction these days.

If it turned out a purchase used a later ADE DRM, I'd return it as unreadable.

Thanks for the clarification. So you can use any version of ADE and be able to strip the DRM.

That depends where you live as to what's local. The local corner bookshop is not likely to be selling their own eBooks. If they do sell eBooks, it's in conjunction with another shop.
