Okay...

Don't the Pythons have OBE's or some such thing?

And Charlie Chaplin was given a Lifetime Achirvement Award by the Academy. Not actually a government sanction, but neither is Pulitzer.

And while we're vaguely on the topic of British Royalty and their Awards, Sir Paul wrote Bungalow Bill.

I haven't been able to find much official recognition of silliness in other cultures, so perhaps the appreciation of the cultural importance of silliness is limited to America ... which would explain why none of the Monty Python members have ever been knighted.
Do nominations count? (Like for Oscars or other awards?) How about in competiton with non-silly items. I need to know the Offical limits, threadmaster....

Silly? How about outrageous (but not necessarily funny)? The first one that comes to mind is the television commercial paid for by the American Petroleum Institute. Americans (probably everyone else, too) hate oil companies cuz they make lots of money and cuz they feed our insatiable desire for oil. In response, the API is trying to make them look less evil. One recent ad tries to do this by pointing out that most of us own a piece of the oil companies in our pension funds, 401(k) mutual funds, and the like. So I'm supposed to now say "I have seen the enemy and they are me - so maybe they're not as bad afterall". I wanted to throw something at the television.

Gas in my neighborhood went from $1.76 to $1.85 overnight last night. Why?

Gee .... who would have thought it .... silliness as culturally significant. Oh, yeah ... me!!

So, since I "own" this thread (not my idea, but I'm going with it for purposes of this post), anyone who posts to this thread is charged with the following task. Find at least one culturally significant item (as determined by some even marginally credible national association), from whatever culture you happen to belong to, that is also extremely "silly."

Thank you. And remember .... if you can't provide me with additional examples of culturally significant silliness, then no posting in this thread. So says the "owner" of the thread.

No, none of the Pythons have OBEs. My freaking uncle had an OBE, but none of the Pythons. Go figure.

Government sanction is not a requirement. Please note original post quoted above.

Chaplin's Lifetime Achievement award is duly noted. Pity the Academy never saw fit to give either him or any of his work a specific award, but then very little of what wins an Academy Award has anything to do with the quality of the work under consideration.

So, so far, I've found two bits of American silliness that have been recognized by credible institutions. You have found one great British actor who was chased out of the US by the tax authorities and because he married a very young woman, and who, belatedly was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by an apparently contrite Academy of MPAS.

It isn't looking good for any of the other nations or cultures at this point. Although, if the British have seen fit to knight Mr. Pratchett, then there's a real contribution to the thread, and thank you!

The other stuff .... since it doesn't relate to the original post, I am simply ignoring. I would have thought that the French or the Germans .... someone else, any one else, would have had some culturally significant silliness that had been recognized by some credible group.

Guess not. Too bad.
