Our K2 from 2009 still works, but I confess, it is starting to struggle around keeping its charge. Nonetheless, it still functions (and is used often to test eBooks for backward compatibility!).

Same here. My K2US will still fire up and download content, but holding a charge is starting to be problematic.

While you can buy newpower99 batteries for other equipment thru Amazon, you can't buy Kindle (might be other 'A' products) batteries via Amazon. Go look up the model and watch their K2 video and see if that task is something you feel you can do. The kit includes needed tools. Iv' done my Garmin nuvi and K4nt with their kits |

Thanks! I don't think replacing the battery would be beyond my abilities, or anything. I'm just not sure it's worth the effort. It's really only a novelty at this point. I don't want to deprive it of its well-earned retirement to the "Great Gig-bag Full of Antique Electronic Devices in the Bottom of the Closet" or anything.

Would the Kindles with dying batteries work if you read them while they are plugged into the charger by the wall socket?

I do not know why not, since dying is not dead.

I've given all my really old ereaders away long since, but I still have an original Kobo Aura that is in fine working order, though obviously the battery's not great. I believe it's a 2013.
I kinda wish I still had my Newton. |

My old Sony PRS-T1 had been sitting so long that the battery was completely drained, but I recently charged it and started it up and it still works. I didn't actually try to read on it because I know the dictionary freeze problem won't have magically cured itself. However, it would still be a better-than-nothing backup device.
