Updating the firmware didn't solve the problem.

But manually creating another .kual file with a different name worked, so thanks!

Good evening.
I just received a brand new PW4 here (serial G000PP), and got here before doing anything else with it (I didn't even register it yet).

I have a few questions about the process, that I either missed, or aren't in the instruction in the OP.

- Should I register my device with Amazon before doing the jailbreak, or can I just go by without ever registering it?
- I just checked and my version is 5.12.4. This means I must send a PM to ilovejedd, the OP doesn't have any update that allows me to follow the instruction directly with this firmware, right?
- After doing the JB, should I stay completely clear of any update that takes me to 5.13+, or if I already did the JB-fix I'm safe, like I saw someone here talking about 5.13.3?
- Last, but not least: is a JB for me? I just want to sideload books, and I know there's Calibre for that, and I'm mainly use it to read mangas and technical books (yes, I'm a weeb and also a systems engineer, so I would love to be able to read Chainsaw Man alongside Unix Network Programming - although I just saw there's a Kindle version for it). Would jailbreaking make it easier to find and convert books to sideload in the correct formats?

This is my first time with a device like that, I thought it would be cool to read in a thing that won't blare blue light in my eyes, but I'm not familiar with the jailbreak/alternative firmwares and apps for this kind of system.

Mostly irrelevant, but some things are wonky on unregistered devices, and, it's a Kindle, so it's pretty gimped all on its own when unregistered.

(i.e., Probably better to register it... when the JB is done, as @ilovejedd explains below).

Yep! (By which I mean, you're safe (as of right now: this may no longer apply on the *next* release), but the updates are still terribly evil, so I'd still recommend steering clear of 'em).

Not in the least ;p. It will allow you to run KOReader, though, which will probably be better to handle self-rolled CBZ or some such. Also, PDFs.

Just a comment on this, better to wait until the entire jaibreak process is complete before connecting to wifi and registering.

OK, thanks for the answers.

I think the only thing that I'd really want from a JB device would be using Calibre for managing my collections, and it seems it can only be done with a plugin in a jailbroken device, and by what I was reading, it requires an older versio of the firmware. So it means I'm out of luck? Aren't there any other ways to use Calibre to manage the collections inside the Kindle?

Also, it seems I can't send DMs. I'll try to post my info in the specific thread to have the stuff for JB.

Yeah, connecting to wifi can have unwanted or annoying consequences.

I've received a PM from someone whose Kindle auto updated to 5.13.3 before he was able to install all the add-ons but thankfully after installing the hotfix. Granted, even if the PW4 auto-updated before hotfix, it still would've been fixable but it's annoying to redo the steps all the same.

Wanted to say this is a great forum and there is so much stuff its mind boggling how you guys are up to speed with everything so cheers.
I am a PW3 user but basically mine is stock and i never bother with anything other then registering and keep it in aeroplain mode.

My mom lately had problems with sight and bookreading is what she loves so I ordered a PW4 for her on a good deal some month ago straight from amazon. Its exactly this model:
G000PP, G8S0PP Kindle PaperWhite 4 (2018) WiFi, 8GB PW4 [Support added in KindleTool 1.6.6] from wiki. Mine is G000PP to be specific and it is black.
FW ver is 5.12.4 (3602780042)
I have unfortunately connected it to wifi if I remeber correctly and registered it to my already then existing account in amazon (same as my PW3).

So two questions really.
1. Is it possible to jailbreak it still or am I done for after stupidly turning on Wifi and registering? (there is a option mentioned about contacting ilovejedd but dont want to spam if there is no reason to.
2. Is there any way currently to change the menus and language in general to Polish? This is really what I am after. My mom does not know english and this would be a great thing to do.

This would basically be the only mod I would want to do really since everything else is more then enough for her anyway. She will open it read and close it. That simple. Still the language barrier stands with options of menus and font sizes. She will not use the store anyway - I will manage the library manually.

In the past I was looking for it and managed to find a polish aritcle with links to mobileread repository and some bin file (Update_Kindle_PL_5.9.7_K7_K8_PW2) but that was some time ago. Obviously that is no usable as not for my PW4 ver but just wanted to mention.

Also if PW4 cannot be conveted to polish lg is there a chance to do it for PW3?

I have tried to search for the creator or anything really but all i find is the same article where you cannot even contact the author.
Guess I will have to just let this go and hope amazon come around one day.

Be *very* careful to pick the right file for your device, because failing to do that *will* result in a brick.

and

?
