I had no idea so many here are survey takers. My apologies if you were offended. My comments are rooted in the recent results of surveys (i.e., "political polls"). They were all so horribly wrong over the last couple of years. If the survey process comes up with totally bogus results as it has been doing recently, then I do indeed think that the process is dumb. I should have directed my comments at the process, not the people who participate in that process.

I don't know what happens when you don't register a Kobo or if you can get away without registering. When I got my H2O six years ago, I registered it.

![]() Unfortunately both are true. I was also making a general point about whether the people concerned lives would stand up to their kind of scrutiny. Not specifically speaking about copyright infringement. While not a christian I agree with Matthew 7:1 and try to follow it. I fail miserably of course. ![]() |

I've registered both my Kindle and all Kobo readers with a legit emails. It's no different than registering to purchase books at any site to me. My only fear has been losing the ereader and having anyone then be able to buy 100s of books on my account. I'm too lazy to use a PIN to lock a reader, as often as I pick it up to read on and off all day.
So my method for my own peace of mind: the Kindle isn't used and stays home (I bought it just on a super sale to see how it is), so there's no concern about losing it/having it stolen. The Kobo was registered with a real email, but there's no payment or purchasing on the account at all other than their freebies, so again, while I'd hate to lose it, no one can make charges on the account. I prefer keeping wifi off anyway so I can choose which firmware and patches I use, but lately I've been purchasing the majority of books from Amazon. I'm really not concerned about either company tracking what I buy or what I read or how often or whatever they want to know... every store you purchase from does that, there's no way to get around it unless you give up purchasing online. My only concern was losing a reader and having someone charge books on it. |

What are the benefits of "registering"?
And are those benefits balancing the disadvantages? Everyone should decide, and behave accordingly. It's not paranoia. It's a facts-based decision. Those accusing others of paranoia don't live either in a house made of transparent glass house, since they have "nothing to hide". |

There is no disadvantage to registering. I have a Kindle PW3 and a Kobo Aura H2O that have been registered for about six years for the Kobo and about 4 years for Kindle. Not once have I had a single problem. I do keep WiFi off most of the time. The Kindle originally wasn't mine, but it was registered and again no problems at all. I know of other Readers that are registered with no problems at all. Can you please show us examples of problems with having a Reader properly registered? |

We don't need to post examples to prove this is happening. Because Amazon says they're going to do this spying and collect this data right there in their user agreement. Read it. There's your "example", if you really must have one. You do not consider this a problem. But others do. |

The difference in our thinking about the situation we are now discussing boils down to proactive vs. reactive. You appear to want to wait until after you've had a problem, and then deal with it. You are (appear to be) reactive. I prefer to try and predict a potential problem, and avoid it before it ever happens. I am proactive. Your stress comes from dealing with problems (that have already occurred), my stress comes from worrying about them (in advance). In the end, you rarely worry, and I rarely have problems. Who is right? Neither. We just think differently. |
