Why not just use calibre's built-in tool 'Polish books' which works on multiple books. That has a checkbox for 'Losslessly compress images'.

You might need to add it to one of your menus via Prefs > Toolbars & Menus

Polish e-books ( a Calibre standard tool) can do that. Just add it to the Toolbar of choice from Preferences: behavior: toolbars

Some major drawbacks to this way of lossless compression are that it does every possible format in the listing and not just the one you want and you cannot specify how much to recompress the images. So you don't get the recompression.

Also, re: lossless compression - in general, running it can paradoxically increase the filesize. If the image is already compressed (ever tried putting a zip file inside another zip file?), or if it's sufficiently complex that the compressor can't efficiently smoosh it down. I think Polish ePub might account for this by not replacing if there's no net reduction, but I'm not 100% on that.

Lossless compression will not replace an existing image if the image is any larger or cannot be compressed.

What would make it REALLY useful would be if you could specify lossy compression – but from what I can tell, the polish command does not allow that

That is something Modify ePub does not do and I don't even know if it's possible to do. Your solution is to use the editor to recompress the graphics.

It seems to work as expected. I checked with the old version and same error message. Installed the new version, no error message and the cover image was updated in the epub.

Does this version fix it? TBH it looks like it never would have worked but I am highly suspicious of that given the time passed. It seems to fail because an image that "looks like a cover" wasn't originally identified as one.
