I realize that, and I agree, however, that's the absurdity behind some warranty provisions. That was got me in my original pissing match with Sony ... I installed additional RAM and a larger hard drive (both of which were functioning just fine), and when another part of the machine went belly up ... they did not honor the warranty because I had opened the case.

Yes, it's a stupid view, but there are companies that take exactly that position, and you need to be cautious if you are purchasing something with the intent of opening the unit and making any modification.

Of course, you can always just deny that you made a modification in the first place and swap the RAM back out if you have to send it in for warranty repairs.

The ACER ONE isn't that easy. You have to remove the keyboard. The upper limit is 1.5 Gig on this one.

Ahh, that makes more sense. I remember doing that to some older laptops years ago. It's a bit trickier.

I would buy a netbook in a heartbeat if they came with a transreflective screen, which can be read in direct sunlight. Handheld tablets like the Nokia N810 have a transreflective screen but they are too small.

I haven't taken my 1000HE outside yet. It's not transreflective, but I'll have to see how bad it is in full sun.

I think I read somewhere that the MSI RAM is also a little less user friendly to install.

All I can say for sure is that the ASUS installation is easy. Love this machine so far.

It is a great machine. I gave my wife one for a Christmas (1000HA) and we took it on a cruise. It is everything it needs to be and then some. I haven't upgraded the memory yet as there isn't any need so far but I opened it up. Looks very easy.

I'm still looking at the 1002HA for b/g/n wirless wifi connection. If I get one, I'll be upgrading my wireless router at the same time.

At this point I think the 1000HE is the unit of choice due to the new Keyboard and advanced battery. It also sports a new processor with a faster bus although folks indicate that the speed change is not that noticeable. Perhaps the rest of the box can't take advantage. It you don't need the wireless n capabiltiy and the bluetooth then the 1000HEA would be good, but of course you want wireless n. I expect a fallout in the list of products from Asus over the next few months with a reduction of offerings so grab them now.

I just looked it up....very nice, and it comes with b/g/n wireless. I might have to update my wishlist.

All I would like to add is that I am in my 4th week with my unit and I am still as happy with it today as I was the first day I booted it up. I have not found any need to upgrade the RAM as of yet and doubt I will have to.
I am also extremely happy with the wireless capability. It picks up the nearest signal at a much greater range than my IBM R52 and holds the signal very well. ASUS has such a great reputation and that is one of the reason I went with it over a couple of other units. The ACER just did not impress me and I worried about long term satisfaction with it. I know a couple of people on this thread have talked up the HE and I am sure its very nice but for my needs and pocket book the HA is just fine. And I am also sure the price will come down as the latest and greatest makes it to the market. And you know with technology at some point you just have to grab your nose and jump in.

I wonder why this is considered to be a netbook. It is nearly as large as my Dell D420 and the weight is similar.

With a 2" smaller screen and 92% keyboard it is no where near as large and the D420. The weight with the battery is similar but the battery life on the ASUS is twice the battery life of the Dell. If you get the larger more equal battery then the Dell weighs much more.

The 420 is a great small notebook machine and has many nice features like a full size keyboard and 12.1" screen but it does not qualify as a netbook using the current definitions. A Netbook class screen is no larger than 10.2"

Well, my 1000HA is 10" and it is fine but I would not drop to the 8.9" models even though the pixel count is the same. I did consider the Acer model however which as only 8.9" at the time.
