Not sure. I want exactly the opposite. I don't want my books scanned - with 512 GB card and possibly hundreds of thousands of books it would take so long, and the result would be a mess.
And I don't use Calibre to manage or to transfer books either.
Calibre is a toy. It is written in python. It chokes on a big number of books.
I know because I tried it on some fraction of my books and it choked completely.
Python is a slow interpreter. It is perfect as a calculator, though.
So I am using a hierarchical multi-level folder structure instead.
Come to think of it, there are powerful and fast book management tools for PC, such as MyHomeLib.
Perhaps for android too? I will have to look.

At the moment I have only 6.01 devices, the one that I upgraded to 8.1 - I gave it to my sister. Everything might be very different in 8.1. I will have to convert to 8.1 another one.
So in 6.01 there are two options for the paths to books: Books and root. Not sure, but possibly in the internal storage only. I am not interested, so I never tested, I deliberately named my folder Bookz so that it is not found.

In case the books on the card are not scanned, you can still find them.
• Use the default file manager (already installed on your Alita).
With the file manager, navigate to your book, tap on it, and it will open in the default reader.
• Open Notifications, see your card there. Tap on Explore. Find your book. Tap on it.
Then your recently opened books will probably appear on the desktop or somewhere.
I don't remember that either, as I am using Cool Reader and it has its own internal recently opened book list.
Well, you may ask me later. I will have to explain things to my sister, so I will have to update to 8.1. and I will have to learn to use the default reader myself.
Currently all the books I am reading do not require the default reader - they are not pdfs.
So Cool Reader can handle them.
BTW, Cool Reader has its own internal file manager - so there is another way to open books.
I just launch Cool Reader and then never get outside it. GoldenDict is integrated with Cool Reader, so I have full access to multiple dictionaries and encyclopedias without leaving Cool Reader as well.
Cool Reader is like my OS GUI
But Cool Reader does not handle pdfs.

Thanks, I'll be looking forward to your next post then. We're mainly reading pdfs (manga or protected text content), so I really need a decent pdf reader, and I am happy with the default one.

It's a pity if all this space (128gb) can only be used for apps and stuff. It makes no sense to me on a tablet whose main purpose is to read documents. O_o

I am not sure, but I believe that only then will the drive be activated and become visible in Explorer.

You mean move the files? No, I didn't. I'll give it a shot as soon as the tablet returns to me, its rightful owner.

The internal (23 GB free) storage space should be used for applications - they can be moved there after installation.
The internally formatted SD card is for data.

Oh, I just checked, and after moving the files, now Alita comes up in File Explorer as a 100+gb space. All the folder structure, including the books folder, are there, so now I have 100gb+ for my docs, like I wanted it.

What files and how did you move them? The apps?
So the action of moving activated something, and even if you move only 1 GB, suddenly you get 100+ GB free, but before moving had only 23 GB free?
Because I never saw 100+ GB free. But I also haven't tried to move anything.

After formatting you have to transfer - then the card will be recognized as main storage.
Then transfer the applications back to the internal storage via settings / apps.
Then the entire memory of the card is made available to the system.

Oh, I never made that "transfer" step when I tried "as internal".
Transfer some apps back and forth? Is it enough to transfer just any one app?
I mean, is the integration triggered by transferring an app, or actually some arithmetic is done with free storage sizes.

Your attempts may not have been successful either.

The internally formatted SD card is initialized with the transfer.
If apps are installed, these will also be moved.
If you don't want them on the SD card, then you move them back.
It's that simple.
And since there are some applications that require large internal storage space, they get 128 GB instead of the original 23 GB.
But you have to bear in mind that a micro SD is an unreliable and easily defective medium.
Therefore, it makes sense to back up the content again and again on USB-OTG and you can use sticks and even hard disks there.

Im using Calibre with app. 120.000 books without any problems.
Calibre Companion has no problems with that amount either.

Yes, there was a prompt to move some files form the internal memory to the sd card once I formatted it as internal storage. I first pressed no, and when I connected the tablet to the pc, I could only see the same old internal storage and whatever space I had left in it (around 5gb because of all the pdfs I moved there). Interestingly, the sdcard was not recognized by the PC at all at that moment.

I went back to the storage settings and finally moved the files. It took around 25 minutes, and when it was over, I connected the tablet to the pc again. This time around tje storage came up as Samsung Evo (the name of my SD card) and had 100+gb free plus all my pdfs on it (so yeah, I guess it's close to 120gb when all is counted).

And because there are apps that don't work really well on the SD card, e.g. forget about settings, all applications should now be moved back.
This is best done with settings, in the top field ->, last line - Android settings, storage, SD card, Apps.
Now you can see which apps have to be moved.

OK, now it is clear. I never answered YES to that offer to move apps.
And then I saw no card. It just disappeared on me.
However it was still possible to eject it somewhere deep in storage settings.
Come to think of it, it is stupid. You always want to move them back again.

BTW, is the internal storage (not the card) any better, any more reliable?
Because I remember in some readers the internal storage is an actual sd card
People even found a way to replace it with a larger one. 16 or 32 GB instead of 8 GB.
Was it in some Kobo reader? Aura One? I think so. So the internal storage in them is the same sd card with short longevity.

Yes, normally its another technology. E.G SLC can handle till 100.000 write cycles.

Yes, but they are using selected Sandisk cards, and on the new device types only half of the cards are used - enough space for switching defective cells.
