I have certain authors that I will buy all of their books. Other authors that I have read previous books of, and new authors depends on the premise of the book. If the book does not grab ne I will abandon it. With the rise of eBooks I find myself able to abandon mediocre books easier than when I was younger.

With eBooks, it's a lot easier to find new books when you don't have anything to read. Back when I was reading mostly paper books, more than once I found myself struggling through a mediocre book because there wasn't anything else available at the time. That's especially true with CC and having my entire library on my reading device.

So true. I can't tell you how many hours of my life I spent pre eBooks. Wandering through book stores, or any store that sold books for something else to read. This is also why I do not mind rereading books. Many a time, when I could not find something new to read, I would peruse my collection for a something I would enjoy rereading.

With me it was wandering about the library and haunting th paperback exchanges. My eyesight was much better then. Happy days.

Years ago I used to bypass Dick Francis because, hey, I have zero interest in horse racing. Then one day I saw the paperback of Reflex, with a damaged camera on the cover. Well, I've been pressing the button on the box for more than 60 years, since my first box brownie; so I bought that book. I liked it enough to buy another. And another.... until eventually I was buying hardbacks as soon as they appeared.

I still have zero interest in horse racing, but I know a lot more about it.

I used to see Terry Pratchett's Discworld series everywhere, until one day, visiting London from Oz, I got bored, went to W H Smith and saw, I think, "Pyramids", bought it; and ultimately finished up with all the Pratchett adult books. No idea why I resisted them for years.

Much the same pattern for most series I've bought. Impulse for starters.

I used to subscribe to Locus a SF magazine and used their reviews also their quarterly Forthcoming book lists. There are also a bunch of mystery review magazines as well like Ellery Queen. You could probably find similar for most genres. Find one whose reviewers are a good match for your tastes and it saves a lot of time and wasted money.

One reason I try a new (to me) author is that the book sounds interesting.
