I finished Yiddish on my drive home from court. I upgraded my rating on Goodreads from a 3 the first time I read it to a 4. If I could give half-stars, it would be a 4.5. It only loses half a star for there not being enough Bina Geldfish.

I am literally savoring Garcia-Moreno's Mexican Gothic. Her narrator is just such a strong, vibrant character that the horror is almost secondary. I will definitely be adding her new book, Gods of Jade and Shadow, to my TBR.

And enjoy it I did. Great fun.

Next up, a random pick from the TBR pile: Masterpieces edited by Orson Scott Card. "The Best Science Fiction of the Century" [20th Century, of course!]

I bought this way back in December 2008 from Fictionwise, so it's about time I got around to it. Especially as it cost me nearly five quid!

I bought an omnibus of the first 3 books by James Herriot some time ago to replace well read paper copies. It is enjoyable! I just have to get around to reading the ecopy!

Always reading another magazine before bed, this time Asimov April/May 2011. The novellas have been average, but there was an outstanding short so far.

Currently reading Mischief by Ed McBain. 1 of 2 books left to read from the 55 book 87th Precinct series. No official ebook out so sent a purchased paperback in to scan and convert to ereader. (I can't read paper any longer).

My 4 star review of Fortune and Glory (Stephanie Plum, #27) by Janet Evanovich:-

Spoiler:
My reader's block has been cured by this book. Janet, my liege. Like most long running series, new characters appear here too. But the author showed her experience by handling them well.

I'm getting a bit tired of Lula as a punching bag for comedy relief. She's the only one who cracks unfunny or funny but rehashed jokes.

I rated this book 4 stars. I liked the pacing of this book most of all. Stephanie Plum's life is no longer in limbo. Read to find out. This book might be the end of the entire series. I'm always demanding from the books I read. It was fun while it lasted.

I am almost finished with Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic. It is not the kind of book that I like (Gothic/Horror and has snakes which I am very fearful of). I was reading it while using the bike early in the evening and didn't quite make it to the end, so I am going to finish it now. Her writing style is good and very easy to read. I had heard of it and added to Amazon wishlist. It went on sale for about $3, so I bought it. I just don't like the genre. Didn't know when I bought it that a snake is part of the imagery and that the recurring symbol is a snake in a circle biting it's own tail.

Does anyone know if Silvia Moreno-Garcia's other books are part of the same genre? I like her writing style enough to read more if it's not about horror. It was good for Halloween reading but not so good for election days.

I've been listening to Jeeves and Wooster during workouts. Wodehouse's colorful descriptions are priceless but Mating Season contains my favorite so far -

“I am told by those who know that there are six varieties of hangover — the Broken Compass, the Sewing Machine, the Comet, the Atomic, the Cement Mixer and the Gremlin Boogie, and his manner suggested that he had got them all.”

I'm tempted to change my username here to GremlinBoogie...

I also just finished Mexican Gothic last night. It ran a little long for me, because I figured out the hook pretty early on. I agree with her writing being nice and I did love the main character.

I'm not sure about a lot of her other fiction, but I did pick up her new book Gods of Jade and Shadow, which is not horror. It is set in the Jazz Age in Mexico.

I just started God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State by Lawrence Wright today. I have read a few of his other books, most recently his pandemic novel. This one is lighter than the others with some humor.

I think I have read this before, as all the stories seemed familiar, even the ones from unfamiliar authors. I can't say I agreed with many of his choices. 3/5

Next up: A random pick from the pile: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Part of a Delphi Classics set, so cost me £0.02 back in 2015.

My 1 star review of The Ancestor's Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution, by Richard Dawkins:-

Spoiler:
I got irked with this book and maybe the fault lies in my limitations, but just like with Roman history, there's a lot of guesswork going on. Is that science?

In this book it's written that it's probable that our ancestors don't come from Africa. But I remember a YouTube video where Dawkins approves that we're all Africans. Politically correct but stably not as much.

I got fed up with a book that's either too brainy for me or because it is simply has a not interesting a finale enough. It could have been better. But I dislike it for now and forever.
