I disagree. Reading out of order will impair the reading experience. While the main characters change, the settings may not and there are background characters that evolve. So you do get spoilers. That's why it's best to read a series in order because you don't know what you might spoil. All it takes is one paragraph to spoil previous books. Those reading lists are only good if you've already read Discworld and want to reread.

I you are going to demand that series be read in order for the reasons you stated, shouldn't you also provide background reading for the discworld books, not to mention all the below series you recommended.

I will second the Anthony Powell recommendation.

I would also recommend Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota series. The final book (?) is coming out in October of 2021. I hesitate to recommend something that is not done, but it is my wife's favorite series of all time.

Since everyone else has been recommending multiple series, I'll mention another one.

The Hornblower series by C S Forester. Great stuff. I'd recommend reading them in internal chronological order rather than publication order, but any order or none is OK. They're all essentially stand-alone, although knowing the backstory is good sometimes.

So IMO, start off with the Young Hornblower omnibus.

Marie Brennan: The Memoirs of Lady Trent. 5 books, starting with "A Natural History of Dragons".

The books take place in a world where dragons are animals that exist, and which culturally and technologically feels like the 1800s. Lady Trent is a Charles Darwin-ish character, a brilliant scientist who's a pioneer in her field, but in a society where women aren't supposed to do science. She travels the world to study dragons, while occasionally stumbling into adventures and political plots.

I love the language, though it's probably one of those things you either like a lot or crash hard against. It's written in first person, in lady Trent's voice:

Other series that I can recommend are The Witche, Michael Mannings Mageborn series, made up of a few trilogies 17 books total, Robin Hobb's Farsley trilogy, Tawny Man, Fitz and the fool and 2 other trilogys.
