Am I confusing something?

And should I update to the latest firmware as a general rule?

Thanks!
There are a lot of useful changes since 4.16.13268. So yes, you should update the firmware to 4.24.15676. Once you download the firmware file (.zip), keep it as you'll need it for the patches. Read the first page of the firmware threads for firmware after the one you are running to find out what's new since then.

The firmware versions after yours up to the current one are...
4.17.13651
4.17.13694
4.18.13737
4.19.14123
4.20.14601
4.20.14617
4.20.14622
4.21.15015
4.22.15190
4.22.15268
4.23.15505
4.23.15548
4.24.15672
4.24.15676

I ordered my Clara from Walmart in the US, so which firmware file is correct for me? The main one? Or one of the Affiliate ones? I assume the walmartca one is for Canadian versions?
Thanks!

Just let the device update itself. It will get it right.

But, Kobo only uses one firmware for a model everywhere in the world. As long as you choose the firmware for the correct model, it will work.

Thanks!

Final question (for now) - I'm using Calibre 4.23 (no Kobo specific plugins yet), which has not been updated for the latest Kobo firmware. Will this cause a problem?

No, it will be fine. Just follow the instructions in the warning message and it will be fine.
