Seriously though, although I've never seen the TV shows (I don't watch much TV), I have found most of the Maigret books to be nicely paced police procedurals. Maybe a bit slow since you get lots of the details of what's going on, but that's kind of the definition of a police procedural.

Bias warning: I like police procedurals, and I tend to be favorably disposed towards mysteries set in France since I love most things French (other than some of the smellier French cheeses ).

Quote:
The fifth book in the Magic Men series, Now You See Them is a wild mystery with detective Edgar Stephens and the magician Max Mephisto, as they investigate a string of presumed kidnappings in the swinging 1960s.

The new decade is going well for Edgar Stephens and his good friend the magician Max Mephisto. Edgar is happily married, with children, and promoted to Superintendent. Max has found fame and stardom in America, though is now back in England for a funeral, and a prospective movie job. Edgar’s new wife, though—former detective Emma—is restless and frustrated at home, knowing she was the best detective on the team.

But when an investigation into a string of disappearing girls begins, Emma sees her chance to get back in the action. She begins her own hunt, determined to prove, once and for all that she’s better than the boys. Though she’s not the only one working toward that goal—there’s a new woman on the force, and she’s determined to make detective. When two more girls go missing, both with ties to the group, the stakes climb ever higher, and Max finds himself drawn into his own search.

Who will find the girls first? And will they get there in time?

No, but I find it often times out when I'm applying filters, and I see an inordinate number of ads blocked so there may be a connection.

I've never gotten around to reading anything by Val McDermid, but she is a Diamond Dagger award winner, so I probably should have...

Here are two titles in her Karen Pirie series on sale at $1.99 each at Kindle US, not at Kobo US, at least as of now.

The Crossing is the eighteenth (more-or-less, depending on how you count) in the Harry Bosch series and/or the sixth in the Mickey Haller series, both by Michael Connelly. Either way, it has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK as part of the UK Daily Deal today.

Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Crossing-...dp/B00URUOJZK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Six months ago, Harry Bosch left the LAPD before they could fire him, and then hired maverick Defense Attorney Mickey Haller to sue the department for forcing him out. Although it wasn't the way he wanted to go, Harry has to admit that being out of the game has its benefits. Until Mickey asks him to help on one of his cases, and suddenly Harry is back where he belongs, right in the centre of a particularly puzzling murder mystery. The difference is, this time Harry is working for the defense, aiming to prevent the accused, Da'Quan Foster, from being convicted. And not only does the prosecution seem to have a cast-iron case, but having crossed over to 'the dark side' as his former colleagues would put it, Harry is in danger of betraying the very principles he's lived by his whole career.

Relentless by Brian Garfield is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
A Native American sheriff chases a gang of bloodthirsty bank robbers

Were it not for the copper mine, San Miguel wouldn’t exist. A hardscrabble town hewn out of the Arizona desert, it’s long on sand and short on excitement. For fun its citizens go to Las Vegas twice a month, just after picking up their paychecks.

Because most of the miners take their pay in cash, every two weeks more than a million dollars moves through San Miguel’s little bank, watched over by heavy security from the sheriff’s department. This week, the security is not strong enough. A team of shotgun-wielding men burst into the bank. They disable the guards with mace, killing one, and leave with the largest bank haul in Arizona history.

Sam Watchman, a Navajo state trooper, is on their trail. But these men aren’t just robbers; they’re psychopaths. Watchman is in for the hunt of his life.

The most recent two titles (2018 and 2019) in PJ Tracy's Monkeewrench series have dropped to $1.99 each at Kindle and Kobo US. I haven't run into this series before, just stumbled on it because one of the titles is part of today's Kindle US Daily Deal, but it sounds sort of interesting. According to SYKM, the first title in the series (Monkeewrench, apa Want to Play?) won a couple of "Best First" awards.

Dead men tell no tales...but their pasts can’t keep a secret.

Gregory Norwood is Minnesota’s most beloved philanthropist, and the story of his son’s overdose was splashed across the front page of all the papers. When a photojournalist sets out to get a candid shot of the highly successful businessman on the one year anniversary of his son’s death, he’s shocked to find Norwood dead with a smoking gun in his hand. The city is devastated, and Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are called in to handle the delicate case. It should be open and shut, but something is not right. Norwood's death is no suicide.

With no suspects and an increasing tangle of digital evidence that confounds the Minneapolis Police Department’s most seasoned cops, Magozzi calls on Grace MacBride, Monkeewrench Software’s founder and chief computer genius and the soon to be mother of their child together. She and her motley crew of partners begin to unravel connections between Norwood’s death and an even larger plot. Norwood wasn’t the first, won’t be the last, and by the end, may be just one of many to die. The breakneck, high stakes race to find his killer and save the lives of hundreds make P. J. Tracy's The Guilty Dead her most outstanding novel yet.

Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth join Grace MacBride and Monkeewrench to uncover a dark and ugly conspiracy that reaches deep into the safety of homes in this latest electrifying thriller from New York Times bestselling author P. J. Tracy.

It's a bitter winter in Minnesota--too cold to kill. There hasn't been a murder for a month, but the lull quickly comes to an end for Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth, when they're called to the gruesome homicide of Kelly Ramage. Found in a friend's vacant house, this was no random attack, and clues reveal that she was living a very dangerous secret life.

Magozzi and Gino trace her steps back to an art gallery where she was last seen alive. The gallery seems like a dead end, but the art is disturbing and exploitative. It may very well be inspiring a sadistic killer, because in this instance, art doesn't imitate life, it imitates death.

Tipped off about a year-old murder that is a mirror-image of Kelly's crime scene, Gino and Magozzi enlist the aid of Grace MacBride and her eccentric, tech genius partners in Monkeewrench Software to help them decipher the digital trail that might connect the cases.

As coincidences emerge, Magozzi, Gino, and the team have to work around the clock at breakneck pace to unravel a series of clues that form the framework of a larger, more sweeping, and insidious conspiracy than any of them could have imagined. Is Kelly the last person to die or just the most recent? And is there any way to stop it?

Since they're now pubbed by Open Road in the US, the titles in the excellent (IMO) Gideon Oliver series by Aaron Elkins go on sale a lot, so I don't post anymore.

But just in case you haven't tried the series and might want to, two collections comprising the first seven titles in the series are on sale right now at Kindle and Kobo US (where they are coupon/VIPable) for $3.99 each. This works out to pretty nice pricing for either collection if you need all of the titles. Per SYKM, the last title in the first collection, Old Bones, won the 1988 Edgar Award for Best Mystery. I'm actually surprised this series hasn't won/been nominated for more awards - I really enjoy it.

Info and Kindle link for the first collection, which includes Fellowship of Fear, The Dark Place, Murder in the Queen’s Armes, and Old Bones are in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3764172
And here's a Kobo US link: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...ies-volume-one

Info and links for the second collection, which contains Curses!, Icy Clutches, and Make No Bones are in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3781239
