My disagreement is maybe to do with age and depth of pockets. I am retired. The price-tag Apple put on their laptops is something I wouldn't pay so it's unlikely I'll ever know how good they are. Even used and defective MacBooks are being advertised at exorbitant prices on ebay. I find the iPad brilliant though if I was young and out and about most of the time it would probably be an iPhone that I favoured. Tablets do tend to lack portability but my Ectaco with a 7" screen will fit in my pocket. No chance of that with the Alita e-reader.

I wanted a less portable 12.9", but because Apple again forgot to include a card slot, I had no choice but to go for 1 TB. At a crazy price. Still, I was not able to get one unless I agreed to pay hundreds of euros extra. Like well over 2000 €.
On the other hand, a much cheaper 12.4" Samsung has a better Super AMOLED screen and a card slot, so even 256 GB is enough. But no luck in getting one either. As elusive as Boyue

So my phone has a 7.2" screen and more RAM than the best tablets. Perhaps I just should count it as a tablet.

For extra storage I bought an iStick which has a lightning connector on one end and standard usb on the other. Apple changed the lightning connector to usb-c in 2018. It's likely that usb memory stick solutions are available to provide extra storage for current iPads. There are a number of cloud based storage apps too.

It is like with Onyx Boox Note 2 - it supports usb otg and you can use a memory stick.
Unfortunately, the usb connector is at the bottom. So you need to hold the device upside down or keep it on a stand so not to damage it.
So much better is a card slot like in Boyoe readers or in Samsung tablets.

That's true. It is physically awkward and I used the iStick to transfer files to the iPad with the app that they developed. It's some time now since I used it.

I updated Ares and now Alita and didn't have any problems with any device.
For technological reasons I decided to use 128 GB SD cards, internally formatted, for both devices.

Oh, this update didnt change the hardware.
Of course there are changes in Boyue OS3, such as handwritten comments in other than pdf files, .....
So this Boox advantage has also disappeared

It may be easy for ottischwenk but it looks pretty involved to me with loads of steps where things can go wrong. I'll wait for a really clear guide in English, plus some very convincing reasons for doing it. Oh yes and to see how it goes for those not used to tinkering with these devices.
