Insurance aside, it *is* important to get bad teeth looked at. A friend just spent a week in hospital due to sepsis, from a bad tooth.

Fortunately (?), it had started hurting SOO bad that he found a dentist for an emergency appointment, and I went over to drive him. He was conscious when I arrived, but within 10 minutes had slid to the floor and didn't respond to questions any more. It was good he had me arriving just then, or it might have been worse than a week in the hospital.

About six weeks ago the streetlight across the road from us stopped working. Somehow the socket has come loose, the wires broke and socket and bulb are lying on the bottom inside the light fixture.

I reported this via the website of the council, I even included a picture. Since it still hasn't been fixed I called the council. I was told they need to send a specialist to see if the light is really broken. Sigh. I told her I'm from the electro technical store across the street and that we are specialist and can see that, indeed, the light fixture is broken. I also warned her about the two dangling live wires.

She pooh poohed and said she would send a repair order to the right department. Why would it take over six weeks to send someone to check it out?

Not sure how the socket, or rather just above the socket could have broken off. But it happened with a streetlight around the corner years ago.

That's awful!

I had an elderly relative who chose to have a bad tooth extracted rather than pay for extensive work to fix it. I guess extraction was a better option than sepsis!

And don't get me started about the Nazi-adjacent rally right by where I work.
That's scary! Hope you are OK.

Absolutely. Cleanings are not horribly expensive and many cities and larger towns can even have dental schools where you can get bargain pricing. (One of my assistants, in NOLA, is having a bunch of implants done for about 1/10th of the normal price.)

Not a new rant, but a recurring one. As in, just now.

I hate, loathe, abominate Amazon’s one-click purchase on Kindle books. A random touch on my tablet and it was mine. I know, I know - it can be returned and it was, but would it be so darned hard to have a confirmation button to avoid this? And once I didn’t even realize I’d done it, but fortunately noticed the book in my library before the return window shut.

I can easily picture scenarios where a random touch => expensive purchase could result in someone’s going below their minimum balance or over their credit limit, resulting in all sorts of complications and charges. Why, Amazon, why?

They can do it - already in place when you purchase digital music - a second screen with a button asks you to confirm your purchase.

To the best of my knowledge, that insta-purchase only seems to happen with Kindle ebooks, and they always send a notification to my eamil, too, confirming that it occurred.

On larger items, like physical goods, I always have a confirmation screen, even for those things that I buy "now." But I would imagine that this MIGHT have something to do with individual settings. Not sure.

Any site where one click obligates you to pay for something ought to have an opt-out setting.

I have Google Play set so that I have to enter my password each time I make a purchase. Every time, it asks if I want it to remember me, and every time, I say no. I don't want to end up like Issy having to request a refund for something I accidentally bought.

Thank goodness Ebay requires more than one click or I would have unintentionally bought a few hideous items by now!

I rely on the email notification. But if you grab a lot of freebies you may need to use a rule to filter those out so you only see the nonzero items.

The other thing I have to watch out for is an item that shows as zero cost but only because my credits have been applied to it. So I try to look carefully to make sure freebies really are free...

That's the single most annoying, misleading thing I've found Amazon to do recently. Someone needs to get sued over it. They USED to clearly say "after your credit...". But then they got Evil.

What Goldman Sachs was to investment banking in 2010, Amazon is to retail in 2020

I don't believe that works for Kindle ebooks? I just disabled 1-click (for everywhere) and still the only options for ebooks is buy with 1-click.

Ah! I only buy from Amazon occasionally (including this week as it happens), and always for download to PC so that I can convert to epub, so because there are so many steps involved in each purchase, I hadn't noticed that "1-click" is the only option - it's effectively 2-3 clicks for me.
