I'm not sure if this is a firmware possibility but I would love to see Kobo not include appendices in the total time remaining figure. I'm reading a book where the footnotes look to be roughly equivalent to the actual text of the book.

There is a hidden option that is supposed to work that way. Adding "ExcludeEndMatterFromStats=true" to the "FeatureSettings" section of the config file enables an extra option in the "Reading settings" page of the settings. The option is "Try to exclude end matter from progress". Turning it on is supposed to do what you want. But, I have no real idea if and how it works. I assume it needs support in the book indicating what is the back matter. Which might mean that it only works with epub 3 books as they do have support for semantics.

There are heuristics based on the chapter title and possibly other factors.

There's no need for a request for swipe instead of tap as that's a feature built into the firmware. If anyone is requesting this then the firmware needs to be upgraded as it's too old.

If he wants it, who am I to disagree.

I think I would just put it to sleep and wake it up. Two button presses and voila.

I just skimmed his post, so misread it and thought he was asking for something that I would like: a reading mode where the only thing you could do was tap the screen to page forward; no tap and hold, no swiping, no menus, ...

I've got a forma with buttons. I'd like to be able to disable swipe too.
I've been having problems with pdfs where it occasionally activates swipe instead of pan when I'm zoomed.

I've made a similar request, but my request was that it be easy to toggle the setting as I generally want to tap, but want to have to swipe when I'm starting to doze off as I tend to nod off with a finger on the screen -- once I've done this too many times, then I say it's time to give up and put the thing down.

I've asked if this can be done with NickelMenu and if not, to be added. That would solve your problem.

As Jon said, this may be doable from NickelMenu. Personally, I just use swipe since it is more flexible and reliable than tapping.

I prefer swiping because I can swipe with either hand.

I can easily tap with either hand as well, though maybe people with smaller hands would have difficulty with that. I actually wish they had an option for tap anywhere (except menu regions) for forward and swipe to go back, as I seldom go back.

What I left out is that I can swipe almost anyplace on the screen. I don't need tap zones.

I tried this on the doorstop biography I just finished and this option shaved some 7 hours off the book and some 6 hours off The Decameron.

These were epubs sent to my Kobos as kepubs.

Can you point to the edition of "The Decameron"? I'd like to test it if it is something I can get. With the edition that is in the MR library, the reading time doesn't change. But, it doesn't appear to have any front or back matter.
