I've had a sore left jaw since Monday night. I thought it was because I have been stressed these last couple of weeks and then I tend to clamp my jaw when I'm asleep. But last night it got worse and I hardly slept. So I made an appointment with the dentist for this afternoon.

Add to that that my left ear is irritated because of my new earplugs. Luckily my throat is doing much better (which is also mainly on the left side), the antacids are helping, though the irritation isn't completely gone.

Thanks. It looks like New Orleans will definitely escape the brunt of the storm.

The bad news on that is that a childhood friend who lives in Lake Charles has been having the 2020 to end all 2020s. Both her parents passed this year after battles with early-ish dementia, then she had to deal with that devastating Hurricane Laura. Her house made out alright with minor roof damage but her area is still in ruins and she only got power back fairly recently and had to spend the hottest part of the summer without AC and with her three, young late-life children. I mean, we're 47. I couldn't deal with toddlers, even if I were 27. Anyway, now she has Hurricane Delta knocking on her door.

Oh, Rumple...that's terrible. I hope your dentist can find the problem. (I, too, grind my teeth or clamp at night. When I'm having a particularly stressful time, I can wake up with an aching jaw!).

Could the ear irritation be an infection, from a tooth? Both your jaw and tooth are problematic on the left side. I've had sinus infections that made my teeth hurt, as if they were abscessed. That's fun (not). Any chance that's it? All tied in together?

I once had a sinus infection that made my upper jaw area hurt.

Hopefully the dentist will be able to tell if the problem is coming from the teeth/clenching.

Bro is hopefully okay. He had brief contact with a friend 4 days ago who is taking a test today as he came down with symptoms after the contact but both were wearing masks and it was brief. Bro is 45 and has bad lungs, anyway (double pneumonia at 6 months, smoked for 1/2 his life), so COVID would not be good.

Maybe the briefness (is that a word?) of the exposure and that they were both wearing masks protected him.

In a typical year, some of the hurricanes go through Florida or along the coast of the Carolinas. This year they're all going through the Gulf and taking aim at Louisiana. I hope at least this one doesn't end up going directly through the areas that were hit hardest by Laura.

It was an infected root. Due to an untreated cavity, so entirely my fault (I hadn't been to the dentist in a while, my mild dentist phobia acting up). The dentist cleaned it all out and put in a temporary filling, on the 28th I got an appointment with a specialist who will finish the root canal. I will have to be careful with what I eat with the temporary filling, not necessarily a bad thing.

It seems the tooth ache is gone, both jaws and my neck are sore, but that is because I tense up in the dentist's chair. The areas where the anesthetic was inject is also sore. I've got a bit of a headache due to the sore neck and my reaction to the anesthetic (I always call it an anesthetic hangover). I always react more severely than most people to anesthetics, but I'd rather have that than no anesthetic or one that doesn't work. And I'm glad this dentist's office is always very liberal with anesthetics, unlike my first dentist (the cause of my phobia).

I'm going to take it easy tonight. I put on my favourite pajamas, taken a painkiller, made my favourite tea, have some Ben & Jerry's and I'm going to curl up and watch The Great British Bake Off

If you're someone who gets "anesthetic hangover", it means you're most likely very sensitive to epinephrine ("epi" in dentist talk). Have a discussion with your dentist, and with the specialist you see for the root canal and tell them to use "No Epi" anesthetic. Some will be fine with that, others might grumble a bit. But if anyone tells you no, or tries to tell you that theirs only has "a very small amount", RUN, don't walk, to find a new dentist.

And yes, I am one of those. And no, losing an entire day to an Epi hangover is NOT the price you have to pay for going to the dentist.

FWIW, the epi is there because it causes the anesthetic to "stick" in the location longer, so they don't have to give you multiple shots when your procedure takes a while. So it's for THEIR convenience, not for any medically necessary reason.

It's seems that making the anesthetic last as long as needed qualifies as a valid medical reason, if not strictly necessary. If I am NOT epi sensitive, it's seems like I'd want that rather than needing extra shots.
