I've read and really enjoyed the two (so far) titles in Max Tomlinson's Colleen Hayes series, set in 1970s San Francisco. Now both have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable).

Night of the Jabberwock - Fredric Brown

Currently free from Lume Books. From the title I thought it was fantasy, and from the author I thought it was sci-fi, but from the generally positive reviews I've just read it seems that's its actually a mystery.

Quote:
All Doc Stoeger wants is a good piece of news from the citizens of Carmel City to print in his small-town paper Clarion. What he doesn’t bargain for is four deaths in one night, and none of them by accident.

After meeting a strange little man who shares his love for all things Lewis Carroll, Stoeger finds himself drawn into a night of confounding adventures that might soon turn to terrors.

First a couple of big-time mobsters blow through town. Then, the bank gets robbed, and a lunatic escapes from the local asylum.

But all that pales in comparison to the strange little man who claims he can take Stoeger through Alice’s looking glass…

This night is going to get even stranger.

Beware the Jabberwock, the man says.

But will Stoeger heed the warning?

Two of the four titles in Laura Joh Rowland's Sarah Bain historical series are $1.99 at Kindle US, but not at Kobo US, at least as of now. I haven't read any titles in this series, but have read and really liked many of the titles in Rowland's Sano Ichiro series.

The Safety Net is the next-to-last (2017, English translation 2020) in the excellent IMO Inspector Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. It is £0.99 at Kindle UK right now. A nice price for what is still the most recent title, for a few more days, until Camilleri's final book, The Sicilian Method, comes out on October 6.

Quote:
Vigàta is bustling as the new filming location for a Swedish television series set in 1950. In the production frenzy, the director asks the locals to track down movies and vintage photos to faithfully recreate the air of Vigàta at that time. Meanwhile, Montalbano is grappling with a double mystery, one that emerges from the past and another that leads him into the future . . .

Engineer Ernesto Sabatello, rummaging in the attic of his house, finds some films shot by his father between 1958 and 1963, always on the same day, 27th March, and always the same shot: the outside wall of a country house. Montalbano hears the story and, intrigued, begins to investigate its meaning.

Meanwhile, a middle school is threatened by a group of armed men, and a closer look at the case finds Montalbano looking into the students themselves and delving into the world of social media.

Fantastic Fiction is now showing an additional book after Sicilian Method, The Cook of the Halcyon.

I thought The Other End of the Line was the end of the series - great to know I still have at least 2 more to look forward to reading!

I remember reading somewhere in some article about Camilleri's passing that The Safety Net was the last one, however, when I googled it, it appears there IS one more, written many years ago, specifically to be the last in the series. So although SYKM doesn't show any more beyond The Safety Net yet, it looks as if Fantastic Fiction is correct. Woo-hoo!

See here for info (and a nice article about Camilleri): https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...o-dies-aged-93

And here's an article about the publication of the last book (with a different title) in Italy a couple of months ago. It appears that there is a cameo from Camilleri in it, which should be fun, and make up a little bit for this being the really truly last one: https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...sthumous-novel

Men have been found dead in the scarlet chamber of an Italian manor. They have no marks upon them, they have not ingested poison, there are no secret passageways in to the room. And they all have awful expressions of terror upon their faces.

London, 1379. Sir John Cranston is invited to a banquet at the Regent’s palace on the Thames. There he is tapped into a wager with Signor Gian Galeazzo, Lord of Cremona and owner of the manor, who challenges him to resolve the mystery within two weeks.

Realising that his reputation and future wealth now depend upon him solving this mystery, Cranston seeks the help of his faithful secretarius Brother Athelstan. However, Athelstan has problems of his own...

The Blood Royal is the ninth in Barbara Cleverly's Joe Sandilands series. I've read and really liked the first several titles in this series, but haven't caught this one on sale before, so I'm happy that it has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005E89KX6

Spoiler:
Quote:
On his return from India, Commander Joe Sandilands, now adept at the arts of dynamic diplomacy, finds himself up to his neck in a tricky political situation. A war-weary London is reeling from IRA atrocities and Joe is further plagued by the machinations of a spy-ring being run under his nose by a Russian emigree princess. When a war hero is gunned down and the life of an even more popular Englishman threatened, Joe knows he only has days to root out the woman who is behind the killings: Irish? Russian? Or somebody quite other?

With the aid of the proposed victim who offers himself as bait, and the services of a woman police constable, Joe discovers that the murderer's motive is not political but much more devious and deranged. And when the mask comes off, the killer's identity shocks even the battle-hardened commander.

The "Dead Man in..." series, featuring Sandor Pelczynski Seymour as a somewhat unusual (a Brit with a flair for languages) East End policeman sent by Special Branch to trouble spots around the British Empire in the years leading up to WWI, is Michael Pearce's "other" series, besides his Mamur Zapt series. I love them both.

The second title in the series, A Dead Man in Istanbul, has dropped to £0.99 at Amazon UK.

Amazon UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01INI2JKE
Amazon UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01INI2JKE

Spoiler:
Quote:
From the author of the award-winning Mamur Zapt books, the second in a series introducing Seymour of Special Branch and set in the British embassies and Consulates of Europe in the early 1900s.

The Second Secretary of the Embassy in Istanbul has died in decidedly strange circumstances while attempting to swim the Dardanelles Straits, the passage between Europe and Asia, heavily used by warships, liners, tankers and cargo vessels of all kinds. A romantic attempt to repeat the legendary feat of Leander, as the Embassy says? Or an attempt to spy out a possible landing place for a British military expedition, as the Turks insist? Whichever, Cunningham has ended up with a bullet in his head.

The suspicious circumstances of his death have to be investigated so the Foreign Office sends out an officer of the Special Branch: Seymour.

As Seymour tries to untangle the threads that lead to Cunningham's death, their ends lead him into all parts of the city, from the little box shops of the Avenue of Slippers to Les Petits Champs des Morts, where fashionable Turkish ladies loiter among the tombs to eat sweets; from the crowded coffee houses around the Galata Bridge where men sit all day smoking bubble pipes to the heart of the Topkapi Palace itself.

Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains is the fifth in the Dandy Gilver series by Catriona McPherson. I've read and liked several of the early titles in this series, including this one. And besides which, it's a great title. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004IYK2BQ
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004IYK2BQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
A cosy Dandy Gilver mystery set in 1920s Scotland. For fans of PG Wodehouse, Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie.

1st May 1926 - Dear Alec,

Just when those who should be working are all downing tools for this wretched strike (and I still can't believe it - I mean to say: riots, Alec - in Edinburgh of all places) guess who is setting her virgin shoulder to its very first wheel?

I am dressed in serge and sensible footwear, sleeping in an iron bed and dining off pickled tongue at six o'clock each day. I am, in short, that nice young Mrs Balfour's new maid. But don't worry, Alec dear: things haven't got as bad as all that. It's just that that nice young Mr Balfour is going to kill his wife. At least, she thinks so, and the more I hear about him from butler, cook and bootboy the more I'm inclined to agree.

So I'm undercover, in disguise, bent upon foiling. And jolly hard work it is too - tomorrow is my half-day free if you'd care take me out for a restorative bun. (Every maid needs a beau to buy buns for her.)

Yours,

Dandy xx

p.s. Ask for Miss Rossiter: below stairs I am she.
