Troubleshooting Reading Time

Hi,

does anybody know why the reader sets the reading time in chapter and book to 1 min.

I kmow how to reset it but is there anything I can do that this doesn't happen?

That can happen if you were flipping through the pages quickly in order to find something.

Unfortunately, it occurs frequently regardless of whether one "flips through the pages quickly" or not and is d@#!%d annoying! Yet another reason I prefer Kobos.

My reading time will fluctuate on content read. A dense essay will require more of my time than a straight up contemporary novel. I have been reading the entire Shakespeare canon and my reading speeds have needed to be reset far more times than I care to remember. I would just rather have the screen tell me how many screen turns or screen shots were left in a chapter, rather than the time remaining.

Hi,

today I had an interesting (?) chat with Amazon. They want me to install the last firmware. I told them I had 5.13.2. After some conversation they mean that they had installed an new one, called

Software-Version 039-juno_1302_cognac_zelda-366142

After restart it is still 5.13.2. They think the Oasis will work well now.

And a wonder: The reading time error is still present. Nice present

It's been present ever since the feature was introduced, and for me turns up every few hours without fail. I do sometimes wonder if the support people actually use Kindles... the only (temporary) "fix" is to search for ;ReadingTimeReset and let it retrain.

I've used many different Kindles since 2009, and have never seen this issue.

Thanks - I used the "fix" since I recogniced the issue. Is this only at AZW3 problem or does it happen with KFX too? Most of my books are AZW3.

The other thing I ask me what the hell is different with the FW they installed me. OK - the cryptic: Software-Version 039-juno_1302_cognac_zelda-366142 is an internal name for the same FW. I had installed 5.13.2 (3661429939) and the same FW shows still up.
Great support do they think we are so stupid that we don't check this?
And yes,m I think you are right about the support people and Kindles.

Is that a typo? It should be 3661420039 for the latest firmware.

You are right it was a typo it is 5.12.3 (3661420039) - never changed. Too much numbers I press 2 times a 9 instead a 0. Sorry and thanks for correcting me.

It happens with every one of their readers, even mobi. I suspect the reading-time machinery is a common library. Whatever is wrong is exacerbated by paging around a bit (something that could easily have been avoided by looking for spikes of page turns and disregarding them) but also has a tendency to happen completely on its own when you're just reading at the same rate you always were.

I have no idea why this incredibly obvious bug wasn't fixed many years ago. If the Kindle software was free software I'd have fixed it myself, but nooo you can't possibly allow people to control any part of the software that runs their e-readers.
