I am having trouble with calibre. This seems to happen on all devices. I get this weird error when opening a large pdf (134mb)

Please read para 3 in Guideline #9

A few oddments come to mind. What OS and version of calibre is your server running on? If running under Linux, is this a distro version or did you install from Kovid Goyal's site. Have you tried opening the PDF with a dedicated PDF reader on your computer? Does the PDF have any text or is it a collection of images?

Perhaps this message should have been posted in the Server forum. Though a better explanation of what you meant by all devices might have helped. You don't seem to have a dedicated ereader since you list iOS/browser and your image seems to be from a browser under iOS on an iPhone XS Max.

And why for the love of any deity you care to believe in, did you use that massive image instead of attaching it to your message using the Attach Files tool so we would see a thumbnail and open the image from that. If you look at the Guidelines, I think that the maximum image size to be placed in a message is 600x600.

Calibre server 5 running on Windows 10. Can’t access this book at all when pressing read in any browser. Pressing download opens the book file fine and let’s me export it to something else.

Doesn’t matter what browser or device

It’s a large textbook with images. I have verified that the file opens fine in other programs. It opens and works just fine in Apple Books and kindle. But not calibre. Calibre refuses to open it.

calibre is not a pdf reader, you shoulddownload and read the pdf in some other program.

Seems like a MASSIVE omission.

I have tried to convert them and Calibre just destroys the formatting.

Why are you converting?
Just have let Calibre use the OS's installed PDF handler (for many of us,that is Adobe Reader. but that choice is yours).
OR
Set up Open With if you need a SECOND PDF app .
Preferences: Behavior: REMOVE the tick next to PDF to let the OS (default) handle that format

That defeats the purpose of having a server really, I want to be able to keep track of progress, highlights and notes and have them sync between everything. Just opening it in another pdf viewer defeats the purpose of even putting it in Calibre.

The Purpose of Calibre is to MANAGE a Library, not necessarily do all the other stuff folk do. Sometimes those overlaps their wishes, sometimes it does not. Where do you stop? Should Calibe look up additional Reference material? How about PAY for that?

I recently added user manuals and guides. Now I simply put the Publisher (the item supplier manual). Presto, No more searching my computer when I need to reference a configuration or maintenance task.
