I grant that some cannot upgrade because something won't work that is needed to work. But for those that do not have this issue, there's no reason not to upgrade. |

So anyone (who is reading this) putting off upgrading to Windows 10 because they think it's going to cost, can upgrade for free. Last edited by JSWolf; 10-01-2020 at 04:38 PM. |

Well, Microsoft is not Apple. Don't know how it is in the US, but here you can get a lightly used Win10 laptop that's in good order pretty cheaply.

We are talking complex software, not "hello world" one.

I think the same about using a desktop. Horror.
I'm one of those weird people who can't sit in one position for longer than an hour or two, max. So using a stationary computer is a total no-no for me. With a laptop I can change places and positions as often as I want.

In the meantime, if people would like to run calibre 5.0 on their current hardware and Microsoft does not let them, they can install Linux and it will in fact work quite adequately despite calibre being complex software. I personally guarantee it will be usable without the user being required to compile their own drivers. |

I think we should band together and urinate all over Linux repositories (suppositories since they are a pain in the ass) since most of them make a mess of Calibre.

Sure, sure. SiS videocard? You need to compile. Epson scanner/printer? Compile again! (Or use a generic driver that enables some 10% of a printer's features). Install F-Spot (an app newer than Windows 7)? Nope, it already bit-rotten.
Linux is built around a primitive and obsolete architecture. It is not suitable for desktop or running any complex software due to lack any kind of user-level API past the ridiculously obsolete POSIX. |
