$50 bucks off Sony PRS-700 @ BooksOnBoard

Didn't see this posted yet so thought I would mention it...

http://www.booksonboard.com/index.ph...DUCT=37&v=desc

BooksOnBoard is offering the Sony PRS-700 for 349.00 (coincidentally, the same price as the Kindle 2). Also includes:

* Limited Time Only: $40 in Rewards Dollars that can be used to buy any eBooks you want on our site, PLUS
* 100 free ebook Classics from Abbey House Classics (coupon arrives with your Reader)
* Free Shipping by Ground in US
* No Sales Tax (except in Texas)
* When you use Google Checkout, you get 1% more off
* Leather Case

I still like my PRS-505 better but if y'all are dying for a touch screen, here's your chance.

[edited to add:] BTW, the website indicates it is out of stock but it sounds like they are still accepting orders at that price and will deliver when the next batch arrives.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

But, with BooksOnBoard, you get an additional $40 with which to purchase eBooks. Not just classics but current eBooks.

Yeah, I'd saw mention a few days ago that they'd dropped the price on that unit, so that $349 is going to be the new regular price.

Sony is definitely gearing up to go head to head with the Kindle 2, that's for sure. If the breadth of available books can get there, Amazon may just have a decent fight on their hands.

Frankly, I'm pulling for Sony

though I don't like the 700. I'm getting a free Kindle from Amazon for having participated in the ABNA reviews. So today, I spend quite a bit of time looking at books on the Sony site versus the Amazon website. Amazon definitely has the edge with respect to the amount of content AND price. One particular book was 8 bucks cheaper on Amazon than on Sony (Miracles of Prato -- a new historical fiction release).

In addition, I had the Sony software (which is required for purchasing from the Sony Store) freeze up on me at least 10 times (no... that is not an exaggeration) where I had to go into the task manager and physically kill the program. I was downloading a lot of the free classics but even things like going from viewing 10 books per page to 100 books per page would cause the software to freeze up on me.

Until Sony gets serious about its software and content support, I'm afraid they don't stand a chance against the Kindle. But I've been wrong before (anyone want to buy some Bear Stearns stock?)

Except Sony has made it possible for folks to buy from other sources by buying Adobe EPUB's or PDF's.

Yeah, I'd agree they're definitely not in the same league yet, but I think all indications are pointing in that direction. You see Sony trying to address the amount of content issues now, so I would suspect that they've got some of their developers working on software enhancement and interface issues now as well. They seem to be going "bang bang bang" down the list, plugging away at the issues which many have said are keeping Sony from becoming a "Kindle killer". Whether or not they'll succeed is a whole 'nother story...

I'm also hoping that this push from Sony's side will make Amazon wake up and smell the coffee, and realize that closing off their system like they're trying to do with the protected MOBI files isn't really in their best interest. If Amazon can fully embrace a more open stance with the protected MOBI issue, then I think they will leave Sony in the dust with little hope of catching up no matter what improvements Sony's got planned.
