Carrie by Stephen King is $2.99 at Amazon US. Price drops for ol' Stevey are pretty rare.

Quote:
Carrie White may be picked on by her classmates, but she has a gift. She can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. This is her power and her problem. Then, an act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offers Carrie a chance to be a normal...until an unexpected cruelty turns her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that no one will ever forget.

I've heard a lot about this guy. He just had a story published in Startling Mystery Stories, if anyone wants to check him out. One to keep an eye on, in my opinion.

Money Back Guarantee by Hunter Shea is $0.99 at Amazon US. This is a short story or novella at 73 pages.

Quote:
With her son’s heart set on piloting his own nuclear submarine, Rosemary Lanchester orders the cardboard craft advertised on the back of a comic book. But when she tries to get her money back for the faulty toy, the company’s customer service center responds with escalating threats. To save her family, Rosemary tracks down the company’s mysterious headquarters with the help of her brother—a survivalist with enough toys of his own to wage an all-out war.
This is the third in a series called Mail Order Massacre and they all sound like a hoot. The first one is about Sea Monkeys dumped in the sewers, the second is about X-Ray Specs that work too well and now there's this one about the cardboard submarine.

I imagine soon there will be an omnibus of all three. But at $2.99 a pop for books under 100 pages, I think they're overpriced. I added them to ereaderiq for a $0.99 sale.

A couple of freebies from Lume Books, both repeats.

Demons By Daylight - Ramsey Campbell
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca
Spoiler:
Ramsey Campbell, known for his Lovecraftian mastery of the horror-fiction genre, presents a collection of short stories and supernatural tales set in the disconcerting world of what seems like our reality.

But there familiarity stops dead, changing into the terror of the unknown, the unreal... exploring uncharted recesses of the mind. It is this terrifying juxtaposition of fact and fantasy that throws doubt even on one’s own sanity, leaving the reader wondering.

Rooted in the haunts and byways of London and Liverpool, his tales are peopled with the restless youth of today, the atmosphere of today’s world. It’s this uncanny element that makes his stories so captivating and spine-chilling.

But these familiar elements of life give way to the unknown: Demonic rites, psychotic disorders, the possession of powers way beyond the boundaries of understanding - Campbell searches the far reaches of the mind and the reader will not easily forget the sights and sounds, the feelings and hints, the true horror of all that he reveals.

Demons by Daylight is a gripping collection of supernatural horror thriller tales from visionary author Ramsey Campbell.

The Curse of Loch Ness - Peter Tremayne
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca
Spoiler:
London-raised Jeannie Millbuie has received news that she has unexpected inherited a Scottish castle after the death of her previously unknown relative.

As the only heir of Donald Millbuie, Jeannie travels up to Scotland to take a look at Balmacaan Castle to determine its future.

The castle, which stood on the banks of Loch Ness, along with its odd housekeeper, Mrs. Murdo, and tales of the oddly reclusive previous owner, is a bit in bad shape, but Jeannie is determined to not make a rash decision about its future.

The weird wailing that echoed through the castle and the general eerie atmosphere led to Jeannie asking questions which Mrs. Murdo brushes off, but after exploration of her relatives old quarters reveals a journal, she learns of a horrible truth the Balmacaan Castle and lake is hiding.

Millbuie and the being hiding in Loch Ness have tied fates - and the terrifying and hideous truth will threaten safety and sanity in a race to the end.

The Curse of Loch Ness is a menacing story of the marriage of man, myth and magic in a nightmare world of compulsive horror and evil.

Usher's Passing by Robert R. McCammon is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Ever since Edgar Allan Poe looted a family’s ignoble secret history for his classic story “The Fall of the House of Usher,” living in the shadow of that sick dynasty has been an inescapable scourge for generations of Usher descendants. But not for horror novelist Rix Usher.

Years ago, he fled the isolated family estate of Usherland in the menacing North Carolina hills to pursue his writing career. He promised never to return. But his father’s impending death has brought Rix back home to assume the role of Usher patriarch—and face his worst fears.

His arrival forces him to confront a devious and impassive family and his vulnerable sister’s slow descent into insanity. Stirring memories of the grim folktales born out of the surrounding Briartop Mountains and the terrifying legends of missing children, Rix knows that in the dark, twisted corridors of Usherland, that dreadful something he saw as a young boy is still there. It’s waiting for him, as decayed and undying as the Usher heritage, and more depraved than anything Poe could have imagined.

Snowblind by Christopher Golden is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
In Christopher Golden's first horror novel in more than a decade--a work reminiscent of early Stephen King--Snowblind updates the ghost story for the modern age.

The small New England town of Coventry had weathered a thousand blizzards . . . but never one like this. Icy figures danced in the wind and gazed through children's windows with soul-chilling eyes. People wandered into the whiteout and were never seen again. Families were torn apart, and the town would never be the same.

Now, as a new storm approaches twelve years later, the folks of Coventry are haunted by the memories of that dreadful blizzard and those who were lost in the snow. Photographer Jake Schapiro mourns his little brother, Isaac, even as---tonight---another little boy is missing. Mechanic and part-time thief Doug Manning's life has been forever scarred by the mysterious death of his wife, Cherie, and now he's starting over with another woman and more ambitious crimes. Police detective Joe Keenan has never been the same since that night, when he failed to save the life of a young boy . . . and the boy's father vanished in the storm only feet away. And all the way on the other side of the country, Miri Ristani receives a phone call . . . from a man who died twelve years ago.

As old ghosts trickle back, this new storm will prove to be even more terrifying than the last.
Spellbinding in scope and rooted deeply in classic storytelling, Christopher Golden has written a chilling masterpiece that is the best work of his career and a standout supernatural thriller. With richly textured characters, scarred and haunted by the ghosts of those they loved most, Snowblind is rooted deeply in classic storytelling. Christopher Golden has written a chilling masterpiece that is both his breakout book and a standout supernatural thriller.

Bad Moon Rising by Jonathan Maberry is $1.99 at Amazon US.

This is the third in the Pine Deep trilogy. I shared the first one a while back. The second also went on sale, but it was one of those 'blink and you missed it' two hour deals. I missed it.

I'll say it again: I hate the new covers. They look like self-published, whipped up in photoshop junk. The originals weren't great, but these? The books deserve better.

Quote:
The final novel in the award-winning Pine Deep saga . . .

In the Pennsylvania town of Pine Deep, a handful of brave souls prepare for an unspeakable evil that has been gathering strength for thirty years. On Halloween night, the legend that has haunted their community will return with a vengeance. The dead will rise, the damned will take human form, and a red wave of terror will consume every man, woman, and child. For the few left standing, time is running out. Daylight is fading, and the ultimate battle between good and evil is about to begin...

A couple of Ronald Malfi books are on sale, $1.99 a piece. I have a couple of his books from back when I was with the Leisure Horror book club (isn't 'Leisure Horror' a funny combo? Like 'Relaxing Surgery').

Bone White
Quote:
A landscape of frozen darkness. The scrape of bone on bone...

Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims’ graves in remote Dread’s Hand, Alaska. It’s the same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.

But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what’s in the woods from coming out. The more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery...
Little Girls
Quote:
After years away, Laurie returns to the home where she was raised by a cold, distant father who recently exorcised his demons. But no amount of cleaning can wipe away the troubled past. She feels it lurking in the broken moldings, sees it staring from an empty picture frame, hears it laughing in the moldy greenhouse deep in the woods...

At first, Laurie thinks she’s imagining things. But when she meets her daughter’s new playmate, she notices her uncanny resemblance to another little girl who used to live next door. Who died next door. With each passing day, Laurie’s uneasiness grows stronger, her thoughts more disturbing. Like her father, is she slowly losing her mind? Or is something truly unspeakable happening?
Incidentally, the two that I have (Snow and Floating Staircase) aren't currently available as ebooks. Wonder what that's about?

There was some issue about 2 years ago with closure and rights with his books and he removed a lot of them from Amazon as e-books. Since then some have been reinstated but I don't get the availability or lack of sometimes with some of his books. He's one of my favorite horror writers.

That's a shame. I wonder if it's related to the collapse of Kensington/Leisure books a few years back?

I just finished a book at lunch today. I was planning on reading The Devil's Bed by Doug Lamoreux. Now I wonder if I should read a Malfi book instead?

Ah, I'll read The Devil's Bed first. That's been my plan.
