The Wilderness First-Aid Handbook - free

By Grant S. Lipman, MD

From the Amazon description:

"The Wilderness First Aid Handbook is a handy, quick-reference guide easily accessible with basic wilderness first aid knowledge, but it does not require advanced degrees or experience with medicine and prehospital care. Recognizing that certain knowledge and procedures are outside the scope of a layperson’s training, Dr. Grant Lipman limits the use of technical terms and advanced techniques that may be unfamiliar to some readers or beyond their comfort zone. This system-based, easy-to-follow guide assists the first aid provider when encountering most wilderness emergencies, from cold and heat concerns and blister treatments to high altitude illness and lightning injury prevention—and much more.

Typically the most challenging decision in the wilderness environment is when to evacuate a sick or potentially sick person, and as such, each section has detailed decision-making steps to inform you of when to be concerned and when to get out. This guidance is based upon the recent evidence-based consensus statement published by the Wilderness Medical Society on the scope of practice of wilderness first aid. Filled with original, full-color artwork illustrating the techniques and procedures described and with internal-spiral binding and waterproof pages handy for travel into extreme environments, The Wilderness"

To me, this might be the sort of thing we would want to keep on our smartphones. As a nature photographer, I've been looking for something like this.

Presumably in honor of the restart of Major League Baseball, Can't Anybody Here Play This Game?: The Improbable Saga of the New York Mets' First Year by Jimmy Breslin is down to $1.99 from $8.99 at Amazon.

In 1962, the Mets lost 120 games. From the book:

Quote:
You see, the Mets are losers, just like nearly everybody else in life. This is a team for the cab driver who gets held up and the guy who loses out on a promotion because he didn't maneuver himself to lunch with the boss enough. It is the team for every guy who has to get out of bed in the morning and go to work for short money on a job he does not like. And it is the team for every woman who looks up ten years later and sees her husband eating dinner in a T-shirt and wonders how the hell she ever let this guy talk her into getting married. The Yankees? Who does well enough to root for them, Laurence Rockefeller?

There’s nearly seven pages worth of freebies from Cornell University Press at Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=cornell+u...62&ref=sr_pg_1

There’s probably not much of general interest, but some of the books would seem to appeal to specific interests without being overly academic (and there’s nothing wrong with that, either, if that’s where your heart lies). I’ve already got a few, but I can see where I’ll pick up a few more.

Had She But Known: A Biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart by Charlotte MacLeod - $1.99 at Amazon

Description:
Spoiler:
Before Agatha Christie, there was America’s Mistress of Mystery. This is the story of her life and creative legacy, from the butler who did it to Batman.

In the decades since her death in 1958, master storyteller Mary Roberts Rinehart has often been compared to Agatha Christie. But while Rinehart was once a household name, today she is largely forgotten. The woman who first proclaimed “the butler did it” was writing for publication years before Christie’s work saw the light of day. She also practiced nursing, became a war correspondent, and wrote a novel—The Bat—that inspired Bob Kane’s creation of Batman.

Born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, before it was absorbed into Pittsburgh, and raised in a close-knit Presbyterian family, Mary Roberts was at once a girl of her time—dutiful, God-fearing, loyal—and a quietly rebellious spirit. For every hour she spent cooking, cleaning, or sewing at her mother’s behest while her “frail” younger sister had fun, Mary eked out her own moments of planning, dreaming, and writing. But becoming an author wasn’t on her radar . . . yet.

Bestselling mystery writer Charlotte MacLeod grew up on Rinehart’s artfully crafted novels, such as the enormously successful The Circular Staircase—“cozies” before the concept existed. After years of seeing Christie celebrated and Rinehart overlooked, MacLeod realized that it was time to delve into how this seemingly ordinary woman became a sensation whose work would grace print, stage, and screen. From Rinehart’s grueling training as a nurse and her wartime interviews with a young Winston Churchill and Queen Mary to her involvement with the Blackfoot Indians and her work as doctor’s wife, mother of three, playwright, serialist, and novelist, this is the unforgettable story of America’s Grande Dame of Mystery.

$5.99 is a bit high for bargain, but this book was published 2019 October 15 and since it is a "Great on Kindle" book, "Great on Kindle" credits can be applied to its purchase.

An excellent book at an excellent price. The previous UK daily deal price was in February 2018 for £3.29 but at that time the everyday price at amazon.com price in the US was $5.57, which was even better. The US price has since almost doubled at over $10.

The illustrations are quite good by ebook standards and many are helped by screens over 6", the color plates are worth pulling out a tablet for viewing.

The x-ray file is riddled with errors, but information to fix over 300 of them with a script is documented in the thread containing the post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...44&postcount=6

It took me a chapter or so to get used to her style of presenting debunked earlier understandings as current over several pages, then revealing the revised understanding, or her own contrary interpretation. But once I caught on, the book became most enjoyable and informative.

It's a good thing you didn't read the amazon blurb, where it is declared an instant classic.

American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard is on sale at Amazon for $2.99.

Quote:
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an “American” or “Canadian” culture, but rather into one of the eleven distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory.

In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent, and the rivalries and alliances between its component nations, which conform to neither state nor international boundaries. He illustrates and explains why “American” values vary sharply from one region to another. Woodard (author of American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good) reveals how intranational differences have played a pivotal role at every point in the continent's history, from the American Revolution and the Civil War to the tumultuous sixties and the "blue county/red county" maps of recent presidential elections. American Nations is a revolutionary and revelatory take on America's myriad identities and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and are molding our future.

A Warning by Anonymous is on sale today at amazon.com (US) for $2.99

https://www.amazon.com/Warning-ebook/dp/B07YKR7PF1/

I read the p-book copy from my local library a while back. It was reasonably well written, but I am not convinced it will change anyone's mind one way or the other. I found it worth reading for some factoids and insights.

It's listed as "Great on Kindle" and X-ray enabled.

Because of Sex: One Law, Ten Cases, and Fifty Years That Changed American Women's Lives at Work, by Gillian Thomas, looks as if it might be kind of interesting. The NY Times Book Review said some good things about it (see the blurb), and it has a 4.35 average on more than 300 ratings at Good Reads. It seems to me as if it might be a nice update on relatively recent progress for women after all the retrospectives around the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment last month. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and I'm going to buy it!

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Meticulously researched and rewarding to read…Thomas is a gifted storyteller.” —The New York Times Book Review

Best known as a monumental achievement of the civil rights movement, the 1964 Civil Rights Act also revolutionized the lives of America’s working women. Title VII of the law made it illegal to discriminate “because of sex.” But that simple phrase didn’t mean much until ordinary women began using the law to get justice on the job—and some took their fights all the way to the Supreme Court. Among them were Ida Phillips, denied an assembly line job because she had a preschool-age child; Kim Rawlinson, who fought to become a prison guard—a “man’s job”; Mechelle Vinson, who brought a lawsuit for sexual abuse before “sexual harassment” even had a name; Ann Hopkins, denied partnership at a Big Eight accounting firm because the men in charge thought she needed "a course at charm school”; and most recently, Peggy Young, UPS truck driver, forced to take an unpaid leave while pregnant because she asked for a temporary reprieve from heavy lifting.

These unsung heroines’ victories, and those of the other women profiled in Gillian Thomas' Because of Sex, dismantled a “Mad Men” world where women could only hope to play supporting roles; where sexual harassment was “just the way things are”; and where pregnancy meant getting a pink slip.

Through first-person accounts and vivid narrative, Because of Sex tells the story of how one law, our highest court, and a few tenacious women changed the American workplace forever.

Note: I had a momentary qualm when I thought that Gillian Thomas might be Clarence Thomas' wife, who would probably put quite a spin on this subject. Not saying whether I think it would be good or bad, so as not to run afoul of the no politics rule - but I'm sure she would definitely put a spin on it. But (I googled it) Clarence Thomas' wife is Ginni (Virginia) Thomas, not Gillian Thomas.
